HELP!!
Sept 10, 2016 20:08:55 GMT -5
Post by sturmbird on Sept 10, 2016 20:08:55 GMT -5
I tried to use one of my H-1's last night. My hands won't work with it anymore. I then drug out my Iwata Eclipse, and it actually was worse. I can spray with it, but can't control either one after about three or four minutes. My hand starts to shake. So awhile ago I got the chance to hold the Iwata Neo with the pistol grip. Worked like a charm. They also had a Grex built like it, but the grip on the NEO almost perfectly fit the web of my hand. The Grex didn't, but still fit very well. Tried a Badger, and it was useless (nothing wrong with the Badger, but hand won't work with it).
Anybody know what the difference is between the Grex and the NEO other than a "sawbuck?" I'm not against the higher price tag, but will it work with my messed up hand? gary

Hey Gary, Best place to start was the feel! To be honest, there is no real difference performance wise between the brushes. The complete breakdown of the Iwata is a lot more complex...if and when you do a full field stripping of the brush. Grex does have a service option similar to badger in that if there is ever an issue, send it off to them in California and the fix it...generally at minimal, if any cost. Both are solidly engineered airbrushes. I have the Grex Titaniu at the moment and did have the Neo Side feed trigger before I gave it to an old Marine with a similar hand issue. To me, if the difference in cost was not the issue, I would probably go Grex, but that is because easy of dismemberment. If the Neo fits the mitt better, then I suppose you need to factor that in as well!

I have both, and I have carpal tunnel as well as nerve damage in my right (dominant) elbow. I purchased the grex side feed, trigger grip and I thought it was great. Then I went to Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon and bought the Iwata Neo..... and I havent really used the Grex much since. Not so much because of the pistol grip or the performance, but I definitly enjoy the top gravity feed cup I got on the NEO, and The screw in needle cover is something I appreciate more than the Magnetic cover of the Grex. Both are great brushes in their own rights, and I defer to TRMs thoughts above on cleaning, because I would be the guy who loses parts trying to do it.

Hobby Lobby sells the Iwata for $179, but with a 40% coupon; your looking at $107. They don't sell the Grex, and all the shops that do get about $204. One nice thing about the Iwata is that it will work on 10psi to 35psi. Not sure about the Grex. I use a small Iwata compressor that is really at it's best under 25psi. Hate to have to get another compressor! The Grex grip is very nice, but somewhat boxy (reminds me of a 1911a1 grip). The Iwata grip seems thinner, and fits right into the web of my hand. Still my finger is not a perfect fit. I have small hands, and that's part of the problem. Still the real issue is being able to hold the air brush rock solid without any shake. When I wake up in the morning, I cannot put my fingers together on my right hand. After awhile I can, but even then it's not comfortable. Even then it's a struggle to pick up 20lb. Anyway a buddy sells both, and is going ask a couple guys with the Grex to let me try it. I have heard here and there that the Grex is easier to clean, and will be a factor. Still I long for Iwata to redo their Eclipse with a pistol grip. gary

It sounds like you are leaning toward the Iwata....nothgin wrong with that at all. Great brush....great price too! As for the air consumption though, they both use the same for the most part. If you compressor works adequately now, then you should have no issues at all with that.

IF you do intend to buy a new compressor.... I HIGHLY Recommend you look at a MASTER Airbrush Compressor with the 1 gallon tank. This one is off Ebay, but I paid 99 dollars for mine through Amazon... It fantastic! I held my airbush full open and timed it, and it provided full open air for 1 minute and 8 seconds before the compressor (quietest one i have heard) kicks on for 30 seconds and gives you another minute and 8 seconds of uninterupted air. www.ebay.com/itm/Master-Airbrush-Cool-Runner-Pro-High-Performance-Compressor-w-Air-Tank-TC-40T-/381233102722

If you compressor works adequately now, then you should have no issues at all with that. I have a tankless Iwata. It's either a Sprint or Smart Jet. Super quiet, but marginal on high pressure spraying. In other words it needs a gallon tank. They sell one with the tank built into a handle, but can't be much more than a third gallon. Still the one I have is a great little pump. Just has to run all the time when spraying. Has an auto shutoff and start up sensor. Hate the thought of buying a new compressor! Looked around for a deal on the Grex, and there doesn't seem to be any. So we're comparing $110 to $204, and is the Grex $90 better? gary

Look very similar to the Iwata! Bet they're the samething for about half the price. gary
