Yup...that was read correctly..."Su-2"! I know, I know, I not something I typically go after, but sometime we just need to crack a box! My only excuse is that I have been in a bit of a slump as of late. I figured grab something and have at it! So....Zvezda'a 1/48 scale Soviet Bomber Su-2 it is! I actually won this kit at the last show I attended. Like I said...sititng in a slump, why not and see what happens! Not being an aircraft aficionado myself, from what I see with this kit, is it is not really too bad at all! The details are extremely prominent...plenty of rivet and panels line...the canopy looks solid and all of the parts have little to no seam lines and zero flash! I opted to go OOB on this one. There is a slick AM PE set available for cheap money...but like a friend mentioned in his thread earlier today...this is a "learning experience"! LOL I am not too concerned with overall accuracy as much as I first need to finish one of these stupid things with wings....and I am a bit intrigued with some natural type finishes....because they look cool to me! Basically, the plane was built in a couple hours. Not too difficult at all! Then comes the painting! Part of what I was thinking is a bare metal finish.Since I have a bunch of Vallejo Metal Color on hand, this was the easy part. Some will notice the speckled appearance in the middle of the fuselage....well..... There are two things happening...first, I want to have a go ad some of Uschi's wood decals. The fuselage was plywood, at least to begin with, on these bombers. This gives me an opening to give them a try. Secondly, the other masked areas were areas covered with fabric at the time...so yes, I feel the contrast might look interesting! SInce the decals are thin enough to pick up the base color below, a combination of Dessert Tan primer and white paint was used. Similar color was used on the flappy things. Also, I masked off some of the connection points here and there and polished them up using some of Uschi's Chrome polishing powders. The main pat of these aircraft were duraluminum...but the contrast of some shiny stuff might look interesting. Well, aside from waiting another day or two for the decals, the rest of this is ready to go for the most part. Once the decals come in....I suppose I will head down that road for the first time as well! Thanks for stopping in....wish me luck!

Interesting choice! Just had a whole bunch of stuff "laying around", eh?

The choice was easy Dupes...it was free! As for stuff lying around? I barely touched anything in a couple months!

Thanks fellas! I have been thinking of hitting another kit I have in the stash with a similar treatment at some point. This is a preliminary guy-check that might make it possible! Dierk...I think I need that pressure right now to keep me going! LOL

Hi Todd!
The SU-2 bomber. Very nice choice. The Vallejo metal paints are very good. Unfortunaly i have not master them (yet). What color are you going to paint it. All green, green/black?

Thanks for stopping in Remco! The Vallejo Metal Colors are certainly a huge step forward for the acrylic side of the ledger...no doubt! Surface prep is still the name of the game. The smoother the surface, the better the result. I would go for all green, but I really wanted to give the natural wood finish decals a run for their money. It may not be accurate per se...but an interesting finish just the same!

This should be interesting. Results look good so far. I've never had success with this brand so I've steered clear of them.

The "new" Zvezda kits are pretty good today Rick. The Lavochkin series (almost perfect) , Yak-3 (some small errors, but are correctable), Petlyakov Pe-2 (propeller and hub are a bit of a thingy) are good kits for a good price.

Thanks fellas! Always good to have a little company along for the ride! Remco...see, now I thought Rick was referring to the paints when he said brand. WOO HOO...a package arrived today form Uschi! That mean the decals arrived! Will try and snap some pics when I get back! Might even try and get some laid down tonight!

LOL...thank Leon! Well, part of the process is making templates using masking tape...sadly, all I have is blue crap right now...which I can't see through to make the template! Looks like I need to hit the LHS tomorrow and pick me up some Tammy! The package in the back is one of Uschi's Scenic Displays...insta-base in a bag!

Thanks Dierk and Leon! Sorry for the delay...that "work" thing seems to screw everything up! Not much progress, but I did manage to begin the decal placement. Before that I added a little shading to where I thought some panel lines would be and then squirted a little more color over them. There decals are fairly translucent so anything under shows through nicely. You can see how light the declas are on the sheet and how the shading and paint shows through. By and large this is not going to be a perfect job. This is meant more as a fact finding mission down for another one down the road possible. Right now, I am happy working with the decals and figuring it out and amazed I have gotten this far given it this thing has wings! Back to screwing around....thanks for stopping in!

Thanks Leon! I really like these decals! Interesting how much the light shading shows through. Thanks Bob! LOL....Oh that is tempting! I actually won an extremely large framed picture of the NC at the last show! I can put her right on the shelf next to the boxed Mo and Arizona!

I love the non-professional-accurate description: "Flappy Things" LOL This looks really good even if it is a fact finding build. Super job!

Hey fellas! I managed to play around a little here and there on this one finally. I finished the wood decals...got some parts together and even sorted out some decals to add a bit of color. I am going to try and dig up some rigging an pop together the base and I think I can put this to bed! Thanks for tuning in!
