Looking good Peter! Spotted that clay a few time in the shops, and been tempted too but was worried about how to stop the left-over from turning into a brick.

Looking good Peter! Spotted that clay a few time in the shops, and been tempted too but was worried about how to stop the left-over from turning into a brick. Seems to keep fine as long as you keep the air away from it. I roll up the end and tape it over then put it in a sealable plastic bag. A packet of Das should only be about 5 or 6 euro in your part of the world. Think it is made in Italy.

Yes, DAS is part of the Fila Group.

Looking great!!! Have same clay and its really great! It has been in a sealed bag for maybe two years now and I hope it is still good. Gonna check it out soon when I build a base for my current build.

Have been adding some thickness and shape to the wire frames of the beasts ribs. My lady got a bit interested in making wire armature trees a few years ago and the model shop sold us some Woodlands Scenics Flex Paste to cover the tree wire armatures with. I have never used it but tried it for this job. Really nice stuff to work with and dries very fast. Also seems quite resistant to running so you can put it on the underside without it dripping off. They say it can also be used as a filler and it can be sanded. I have put quite a few coats on to build it up to this.

Looks to be an excellent product - only to be expected for that price, though. 'Also seems quite resistant to running': a bit like my dad - but he's even resistant to walking and nowhere near as useful.

Being of Scottish decent I thought it was very expensive when I brought it but at over 470 ml - nearly have a litre I guess it is not so bad. I have no idea why they use such a big container. A 100 ml bottle would make more sense.

It will probably take me 30 years to use half the jar of this. After I leave this world the beneficiaries of my estate will inherit half a jar of Flex Paste. Had the money been spent on whiskey there would be nothing for them except an empty whisky glass.

WOW!!!! The crackled ground is fantastic!!! How did you do that?!?!?! I always wanted to try this on my future desert diorama builds. Thanks Andy. Two different processes. The first is the smaller cracks. I used a Citadel Product ( War Hammer ) called Agrellan Earth. Available from any War Hammer outlets. I think this is the only product of its type out there and reasonably new. Lots of tutorials on You Tube of it. This product cracks as it dries so not like the old crackle products that you painted on then covered with a layer of paint that the top layer cracked. I have the Tim Holtz Crackle Paint ( Distress ) which is good but the cracks are very fine. With this Citadel product if you put it on really thick and gloopy you can get some deep cracks. If you just paint it on there is very little depth to the cracks. I did a base coat of paint and then did a coat of Tamiya Clear before applying the Agrellan Earth. I read somewhere that the clear helps it to crack better ? The much bigger cracked section I saw this done in a book I recently brought. Milliput putty mixed and rolled out thin. Then while wet placed on a sheet of soft cardboard coated in white glue - wet glue. Milliput left to half dry then twisting the cardboard from different angles until the Milliput cracks to how you want it. Once dry pull it of the cardboard and place on your base. - This was not so easy and removing it from the cardboard was hard with some of it breaking away and some crumbling. I was then left with a bit of a jigsaw puzzle piecing the bits together on the base. I have since seen a different way of doing it which I am sure would be much easier and that is to get a thin sheet of cork and rip it into sections then glue the pieces to your base. This technique has to be so much better. No waiting for putty to dry and most importantly you can completely control the size of the sections you tear. You can also draw out where you want your cracks on the cork sheet first. This is how I will do it next time. Simple clean cheap and easy. Hope you find this useful.

And ........ Once I laid out the big Milliput cracked sections I used Das Air Dry Clay to raise the rest of the base around them to the height of the Milliput sections. Covered the dried clay with Vallejo Primer then spread my Citadel Agrellan Earth on top. Before putting the clay on I spread white glue on the wooden base to help attach the clay to the base. Wet glue everywhere and kept wetting my fingers with water to help shape the clay. The wet glue mixing in to the clay did not have any adverse effects on it.

Some confusion here - I am Peter not Shay. I am unsure how you managed to confuse us as I am a tall and handsome Kiwi living in New Zealand, while Shay is short and usually unshaven - not unlike a Hobbit, and is a Kiwi living in exile in Belgium.

Excellent stuff! Karma+1! But as I'm a urine-extracting offspring of unmarried parents, I have to ask: how did you make the three petrified turds? Thank you Dierk. I must confess that these are not in fact real turds. I have replicated them using Woodlands Scenics Talus - ( small rocks ) I am very sorry to hear that you are a barstard, although I have long suspected that may have been the case. Are you eligible for state funded counselling ?

I have to to apologize, Peter, indeed, I noticed just this morning the difference Belgium/New Zealand and I thought about making yesterday a confusion especially I didn't know of any project of Shay moving in New Zealand. And now your message cleared the situation. Sorry again! Nicolae

Are you eligible for state funded counselling ? I'm afraid not Peter - in this age of austerity they simply told me to sign up to MSC. Their reasoning was that I'd feel less weird in the company of grown men who prefer expensive modelling materials to expensive whiskey
