Paint chipping for wheels This SBS is meant to show how to easily do chipping effects on wheels for such vehicles as the DAK Panzers such as Marder III and PZ II. This can also be applied to white wash tanks for more realistic and contrasting effects. I chose to use what I had on hand which was a left over Panther wheel. This is basically the same principal as the above mentioned tanks in that there a large steel wheel with rubber tires. The two below pics show how the paint will wear or chip off revealing the underlying paint, in this case it's a base Panzer gray with an over spray of a desert tan color. The same for a white wash tank would be white over Green, P-Gray etc. Although these are color profiles they work just as well, or better than a period B/W image. I first started by applying a base coat of Tamiya panzer Gray followed by a clear enamel to seal and protect the acrylic gray paint. Next a couple of misted coats of AK worn effects. You can also use hair spray for this. After the worn effects air dried I then applied several thin light coats of Tamiya Buff. Since this is just an SBS on the technique I didn't worry about mixing or applying the correct shade of panzer gelb. You get the idea. With the top coat dry it's time to start the chipping. As with the standard HS technique I used tap water and a soft brush to wet the surface. I let the water start to dry and then started the actual chipping with a stiff brush. The trick to this is to chip around the wheel since this is where the paint would wear or chip away. By chipping more on one wheel and less on another you can add some variation and eye candy. Be sure to leave paint on the center and recessed areas. Here is the almost finished wheel with an AK DAK wash added. from here you can add dust, dirt, mud etc. Don't forget to paint the rubber section. Like I said, this is quick and easy to do and gives pretty good results. If your not familiar with the HS chipping technique you can also do this with the sponge technique being sure to chip only the wheel area as shown here. this is just one of many ways, or things you can do with wheels. I hope this will be of use to some and maybe motivate you to try it, and also improve on it. Cheers and happy modeling.

Nice work Rob, always glad to see the HS tech being used.
I actually like the shade of the Buff sprayed on...I might try that color for my African Tiger...

Thanks fellas, glad you like it. Like I said, just a quick SBS to give an idea of what can be done to add that little bit that makes a model better.

Dan my pleasure bud. I'll normally pop up an SBS if someone needs to know how to do something, but I'll be too busy for those the next few months.
