Memorial Day Thanks

Well, to all those out there who have served and like me have friends resting on foreign shores,  THANK YOU and have a safe and Happy weekend. 

For me this isn't a weekend of sales or picnics.  Veteran friends of mine gather, smoke really good cigars and drink 50 year old scotch toasting those who have fallen and no longer able to join us..........

you know Veterans have picnics and get-together like everybody else does. Yet we hold those events even more fondly that most think. We laugh and joke about the guy who could walk on his hands. It' a privilege to get that status that not everybody is afforded for one reason or another. Yet most vets had no idea what day it was, let on what week of the month. Bad luck to update your short timer's calendar more than once a month anyway. You remember them most by the current of that week or month. Still after a few years they start to grow together. You remember faces and nicknames, but real names fade away in time as well. Getting old is a bitch.

By the way I can still remember this day in 68 quite well. I was part of a small group that went to an unnamed mountain top on the Lao border. We lost the place to the land lords from KIA/WIA's and a lack of replacements. Other than getting rat bit a dozen times I left without a scratch on July first. We didn't even know what day it was when we inserted; let alone when we left in the middle of the night. Three or four months later the 196th moved and called the place Melon. Now in the winter of my life I can sit around and crack the seal on a new bottle of Greenspot, and light a cigar with Gloria. Her brother inlaw will usually call to give me the weather report out on the Hiep Duc Ridge, and we'll laugh and cuss various OP's we knew too well. I'll end the call by telling him well talk this time next year if we make it.
