In an effort to finally actually start a kit that I have a good chance of finishing I picked this: For those who don't know: AMG is a small Ukranian outfit that makes short-run kits of unusual subjects. Only has a couple of smallish sprues, some PE, wire and some white metal parts: How difficult can it be? Actually, to quote the excellent TV series "In the Loop": Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult! This should've been a warning to what was in store for me, more gappy than a very gappy thing: After sanding the hull halves on some emery paper stuck to a sheet of glass, some filling and sanding I ended up with this: Things didn't get better when I had a look at the instructions - they make Dragon's look good! You get a folded A4 sheet with some vague drawings - if I hadn't found some line drawings over on armchair general I'd have been buggered. All the parts are blessed with very pronounced mould lines, some of the parts need modifying, all the locating holes need opening up. The seats are just flat bits of plastic, so I made some new cushions with Green Stuff. The search light I replaced with an item from elf. To cut a very long story short, this is what I ended up with so far: Currently waiting for the primer to cure. Thanks for taking the time to have a look and ACW.

Showing your age there Pete The 'instructions' have struck again: there are supposed to be 'bumper' for lack of a better term running along the hull from about the middle to the stern. I'll post a pic later, but you'll be hard-pressed to a) Identify the correct part and b) where it's supposed to go. Turns out there are a couple of lengths of white metal included in the kit for these items, but a) they're round and b) too short... It's a blessing in disguise though: with them in place it would be much more difficult to mask the hull in preperation of painting it red. Talking of red bottoms: somebody deserves a spanked one for this!

So, I added the bumpers, made from some 1.5mm styrene rod of an origin that's lost in the mist of time, scraped flat on one side with a #11 blade, and CAed to the hull as I'd already primed it. Basic colours have been slapped on with detail painting started. Top of the hull is dry-fit only as I've yet to do the interior. Screens still need more cleaning, and the frame needs touching up in places. The instructions would have you paint all the fitting with steel, but I went for brass instead as these boats started life as pleasure boats it seemed more fitting: Oh, and the instructions struck again: they would have you fit the ammo box to the left of the Maksim MG, when every fule nose that the belt was fed from the right - every fule but me...had a bit of a brain fade and glued it to the left before I noticed...

Looks like it would be pretty quick on the water. Nice. Looks don't deceive you Marc - they were powered by the 50hp GAZ M1 engine, giving a top speed of 40km/h, relatively light as they were made of plywood and a shallow draught of less than 2 feet, but could carry 15 men.

Sooo, those of you who bothered to look at my last update will have noticed considerable creep in the wash I used - I must admit I didn't really notice the extent of it until I took the pics - eyeball MK1 isn't what it used to be...But I wasn't too bothered, as I knew the next stage would hide the tide marks. I mixed a thin wash using Vallejo Wash for Winter Camo, a drop of light grey, some thinner and Retarder Medium - which, BTW, I really don't like as it's very thick so you need lots of thinning and end up with much more of the wash than you actually need. Also put most of the finishing touches to the tub (not really happy with the passenger seat, but without any sort of indication of how the parts should go together, it is what it is) and glued it to the upper hull - if you've been following this build it won't surprise you to learn that work was required to mate the two sub-assemblies. Next up some chipping on both the ammo box fitting and hull. As I'm dealing with a 'wooden' hull I'm thinking any chipping will be paint splintering off rather than wearing through? Anyhoo, enough blah, pics: Hope you like what you see and ACW and encouraged.

Cheers Leon and PJ! After spending some time looking at pics of boats, all of them with a build-up of algae below the water line, I decided to try and recreate the effect. Some while ago I accidentally bought the Life Color set that's supposed to recreate just this effect, so I applied the dry algae powder with the black fixer from the set...meh, as soon as the fixer had dried it looked way too light, nothing like the black/brown stuff I saw in the pics. Tried to tone it down with 'Garam Masala' spice mix, which helped but was still too light - but the hull smells really mouth-watering now: So today I mixed Vallejo's Dark Brown Wash and Oiled Earth Wash in equal measures diluted it 50/50 with water and applied it with a pipette. Once dry it looked much closer to the reference pictures: I think I might mate the top and lower hull next.

Now that looks like a suitable marine accumulation there Dierk and you've got a great smelling combination as a bonus! Coming along nicely despite the fight it's putting up in the process.

Cheers Leon - I assumed these boats were well looked after, so I didn't go my usual route of getting it all mucky.

Looks like it will be right at home on the Studebaker when it decides to finally arrive! If it hadn't put up some kind of fight, I would've been disappointed in your choice of subject.

Should look a bit like this: I'm hoping to disappoint you soon - wouldn't mind something less struggly for a change TBH

Nice work. I like the distressed look you gave this model. Thanks for taking the time to photograph and post as that can be a chore in of itself at times LOL.
