Hey guys...and gals! I thought I would toss this in the DUel section, mainly because it is a sort of duel, just not with anyone on here...at the moment! LOL A good friend of mine suggested I should bang out a little Dio from a picture I had of my Grandfather from Germany, 1945. It seems he had a similar picture with his father from the same time frame-ish and interestingly enough with a 109 in a similar pose...LOL!! For now, I will share my stuff, I am sure my friend Jim will either swing by or let me post some stuff from his end when it comes about. To cover the spread, here is the kit I chose.... Another good friend of mine (Chris Leblanc) actually donated the kit to the cause! The Trumpy kit worked out well because of the included engine detailing...something that will be apparent after seeing the picture I am shooting for... I only cracked into the kit last night, so not much has been done, but we all need to start somewhere! The cockpit in this kit is not too bad at all, so with an aftermarket instrument cluster, things should look okay. It was the section between the engine and the cockpit that is a bit soft. I think there is an AM set for this but I really didn't want to look and wait for it. I pulled out some white stuff and some brass shim stock and tossed something together. There are a number of details still to go, both on the engine and the firewall but I think there is potential! It is a bit early to be thinking about the finish, but a big thanks goes out to Dupes for answering a few technical questions regarding the scheme/numbers! Only thing I am a little concerned about will be the figure when the time comes! I am good with a 1/35 scale figure being used in a 1/32 plane, but it is the figure itself that does not exit per se. I found something I could convert easy enough in Miniart's Kit with a resting US soldier and a motorcycle. I am just looking for the kit at a decent price...LOL Not being cheap...but $40 for a styrene figure is not going to happen! Okay...back to the bench!! Thanks for swinging in!

Do your duel requirements include your opponent wrecking a 109? Or would you allow a "pristine, flyable" aircraft?

LOL....not a requirement, but the picture he has of his dad the 109 is wingless as well!! But he has a small section of the tail with the swastika on it, leaning up against his legs! I will try and grab the picture from him to post along the way! He is in the same boat though with plenty of scratch work to be done!

Thanks Rob! LOL...you know me, it didn't take too much to get me to open the box! Thanks PJ! 1/32 is definitely easier to work and than 1/4 or Braille! LOL Probably could have gotten away with 24th!

Perfect scale for working on a 109 IMHO, sounds like the perfect project for this time of year. Off to a great start!

Rob, LOL...you know it! Bill, I like this scale...LOL Weather has changed for building! Maybe I'll gt lucky enough to sneak this under the wire this year! Thanks Marc! Glad to have you along! Trying to work out the scratch building on part of the fuselage right now! Only interesting update came with a search for some details in the frame. My hunt lead me to shot in a million find. Scrolling through some guy's Flickr account and hundreds of 109's, I came across the exact same plane in a picture taken in almost the same spot which looks to me like it would be 2 or 3 months prior. The pic on the top is the one I found (obviously judging from my first post ) My grandfather's picture was dated August 11, 1945. I am guessing the other picture is in April. Back story for the time and place, my grandfather's AAA Bn was at this field in Gütersloh, Germany in April of 1945. The US captured the field. His AAA Battery was stationed at Gütersloh from June to Sept. for protection of the field and the fact that the 9th Army used this location as headquarters. The lack of debris from the first pic to mine and the length of the grass, it makes sense to me! LOL Trying to wield some white plastic around to get the fuselage together! Detailing the engine a bit more too! Hope to have an update mid week or so! Thanks for swinging by!

Still plugging away over here... Time seems to be ad a premium at the moment, but I was able to steal a couple hours over the weekend to "break some eggs"! Basically what it came down too, was I originally reworked the firewall since the cowl was going to be off for this one...however, it just looked like sh*t to me. So, I did it again! What is looked like from the pics above after round one... Second issue to crop up is the wing attachment section. The kit provides no details for removal of the wings and certainly nothing in the way of landing gear internal mounting. Chop chop chop.... 2/3 of the back part of the belly will have the plates installed, so I was not too worried about the internal framing in that section. The new fuselage part are seen in this picture, however, that was a bit of a trial and error ordeal...but worked out. After a little back and forth, I think I got something to work with for the landing gear mounting brackets....and they move so I can still position the landing gear in the correct angle once they get mounted. I have to bang out a couple bolt heads for the ends of the brackets, but that's about it! The crap on the right is what goes into the thing on the left! LOL So, there i a little more wiring and cleanup...add the LG brackets and ...clean things up again...maybe, just maybe the office can make it back to the bench to finish off the interior and then PRIMING! Those gun mounts sucked, but needed to be done! LOL At the end of the session, there is always a healthy pile of guts headed for the bin! Off and running...hope to get back to this at some point this week! Thanks for tuning in!

Thanks for the kind words...and of course the encouragement! Things have been a little slow at the bench! That time of year and we have been running around with work and family things. No pics yet, but I am basically done in the office. Once I get my butt back down to the booth to fire up the compressor, I will hopefully paint the interior so I can put things together...so I can work more on the exterior! The slight delay is not totally a bad thing at the moment...seems I misplaced my pounce wheel for rivet pattern making! LOL Time to clean again I suppose!

Looks like an interesting project Tod, love that it has a bit of history and a family tie to it. Thank you my friend! The family history is what is driving this one...LOL It is on hold until I get through the next 4 weeks as there are two big shows I am traveling to. The travel tends to put a crimp on the personal build time!
