1st finish of the year with a lot of fails. Epic fail? Nah, but will likely get different opinions here. In the dark and scary place that is my head, I keep telling myself, there’s something there with the buffed Tamiya TS-30 Silver Leaf paint. Didn’t’ work too well in 144th. Looked better with 1/72 though. Got comments about the “size’ of the tonal variation (TV) so wanted to try 1/48 next. Whereas in many pics of camo the TV can be muted, pics of the metal skin exaggerates it somewhat so the 1:1 look is better than I can get in a photo. Now the fails. Some having to do with materials and some with my own screw ups and failing to use ‘em properly. 1. I did so much backwards. The last thing to paint should have been the metal skin. Any color that needed to go down should have been first and left masked. 2. The delicate nature of the paint surface, which ties back to the 1st one. Handling wear a minor problem but easy(ish) to tough up and rebuff. 3. Forgetting the difference between MM acrylic flat and Testor’s Dullcoat, the latter being used. Less like a layer of dry clay when dry and more like another coat of paint. So, when I slathered it with Mig PLW and went to wipe it down with a Magic Eraser and almost nothing comes off. Had to scrub, and fail 2 comes into play here as the paint went do to the primer in a few spots needing tough up. 4. Again having to do with 2. Used low tack tape, made lower by sticking it to the back of my hand, to mask some of the areas that needed silver touch up. And still it pulled off some of the decals in spots on the left side. Overspray and buffing got on the decals that’s led to a fail 5. Don’t try to clean a decal that doesn’t have some sort of seal coat over it. I took some off the blue off on the upper wing insignia. There are a few more but as I write all this stuff down I am thinking it’s getting too close to “epic”. 😉 But, with all that I did finish the build. The pics hide some of the bad, and there is some good to look at but this will be close the front of the “what get tossed for shelf space” decision that’s comes around. Long post but if ya made it this far, I guess ya didn’t care.

It looks like metal and the painted area looks like painted metal....mission accomplished.

I’d be pretty excited to get a finish like that Wing! I’vee avoided metal because I have no clue how to do it. Well worn is far more realistic than all shiny and bright

Tell everybody that it is a incomplete cleanup from a leaking engine.
