Robin Olds Remembered

Haven’t posted here in a while. Have been busy with other things but slowly the bench is getting some use. I recently completed this huge Tamiya 1/32 F4 as a commission and done in Col. Robin Olds markings. He was a remarkable resourceful Command pilot who came up with an ambush type of a mission called Operation Bolo, designed to trick the NVAF into exposing the few Mig 21s they had that we’re causing heavy losses on the F105s. Let’s say that Olds and his boys kicked the booties out of the 21s in the fight. The F4 in MIGCAP battle dress was a bad ass Mig killer as the Col. clearly demonstrated. 

I’m so relieved that it shipped out to its new owner and arrived with no damage. The pit details are well molded and paint up really well. The seats were naked so Eduard pe was used to dress them up. I cut thin masking tape strips to spray the stripes on the face curtain rings. The decals were the kit included ones and were fantastic, thin and great quality. The loadout is pure MIGCAP.

Paints are Mr Color lacquers that are simply a joy to spray. My Sotar gets credit for the freehand camo demarcation lines. Several shades of Alclads were used on the NMF areas. Flory washes and artist oils did the griming along with chipping done with a sharp Prismacolor silver pencil.

Welcome back Ernie!!! Glad to see you around brother!! I cannot begin to say enough good about this build. The paint, weathering and decaling are just dang near perfect. The efforts on the stencils alone is worthy of an award. I've seen these models in real life and at almost two feet long they are GIANTS!! Beautiful finish and awesome photography.

Thanks. The kit is nice but it throws you a couple of curb balls as you go. A couple of parts have a small fitting issue but it’s easily corrected. The biggest goof is the non truncated intakes that have a nasty ugly gap. The FOD covers hide that .

Thanks Duke. He was quite a character and respected by his men. Read he enjoyed his drinking that sometimes got him in trouble with the brass.

Thanks goose. Yea the Sotar is pretty awesome. The needle is the one it brought which is .2. I thinned the paint a good 60/40 or a bit more and sprayed at 8-9 psi if I remember correctly. It’s all a game of let’s try this or that till you get what you are looking for.

Awesome thanks! What I’m learning is my pressure is too high when i try to do it this way. i was going higher to try and get a thin pencilline. Will reverse my logic and go lower. Appreciation the advice

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks and yes these seats can be kits by themselves.
