There is no way I was typing the full name in that title! Monday I got the hankering to build a nice out of box aircraft and since the kits I bought at the flea market a couple of weeks ago were sitting on the table so... For a change of pace this will be done with very lightly weathered almost factory fresh paint. Cockpit assembled Cockpit base coat Detail painted and tinted Future wash Not sure who designs these models with the nice padded bucket seat but it has to either go or be hidden and since this will be OOB then hidden it shall be. Base detail in gloss You know what wash. Even glossier Pilot in dark brown wash but not flat coated yet. Cockpit still glossy The only issue I have had is when I tried to put the decal on the panel it exploded into a million pieces and the resulting shrapnel almost took out two of my fish and the cat! Going to see if I can save the rest of them with an overcoat of lacquer but may have to go aftermarket. Be a shame because I like the kit markings. I just went old school and dry brushed it but still have a couple of steps to go to tone it down a bit. Wasn't to upset about the decal as the gauges were so finely printed they were almost invisible anyway. The cockpit is going to be so tight when closed up that anything that can be done to make things pop will help.

That is cracking looking cockpit Be even better when it is done. The sad part is that once all closed up you will see about 5% of it!

That is a real shame, but we know it's done Yep! Like spending 40 hours detailing the interior of a 1/72 bomber or the driver's compartment of a 1/35 tank nobody can really see in there but you know it exists.

Outstanding kit you have chosen to take on. The Frank is a gorgeous aircraft. The cockpit is looking righteous.

This isn't something I would have went out and looked for but it just happened to be one of 3 I found at a flea market for dirt cheap a couple of weeks ago. I must say that this is my first old Hasegawa kit and I am actually really impressed with it.

If I'm correct I have the same kit in my stash, so it's nice to follow how this builds up.

If I'm correct I have the same kit in my stash, so it's nice to follow how this builds up. It is very nice kit for it's age. Nice OOB detail without being at all fiddley. The plastic is a bit weird in that it can tear easily instead of cutting cleanly. Even using my nice sharp sprue cutters and trimming with a new blade I ended up with some torn spots where the sprue attached. The seams closed almost completely up with The wing roots however were a perfect fit with no filling required at all.

OK so the decals are unusable so this project is getting put aside until I can track some down that don't cost more than I paid for the kit. If I don't find any in a reasonable period of time I will make my first ever attempt at painting the markings.
Stay tuned.

There is no way I was typing the full name in that title! What? "Nakajima Ki 84 Yon Shiki Sentoki Hayate? You must learn to sinku innu Japaneesu! A friend mentioned that we Westerners tend to say "Kay-Eye 84", whereas as you can see on the box top it is just "Ki". I had always said "Kay-Eye" up until then. Kind of like the Monogram Aviation book on the Nakajima Kikka. The author wrote that it should be pronounced "Ki-Tsu-Ka", but that is not correct. The middle letter "Tsu" is small, which means it is just an inflection point, and not sounded out. And that is your Japanese lesson for today. Ah-sankyu. Oh, and nice progress on the Hayate! I really like Hasegawa's current approach to 1/32 aircraft - lots of detail where it counts, and none where it doesn't. And their pilot figures are exquisite!

LOL My car is a Toyota 86 "Hakone" special edition. The 86 is not eighty six it is said eight six as separate parts and the word Hakone has been pronounced so many different ways I have no clue how it really should be said!

This is such a cool kit and you're already off to a great start on this Tony. That engine looks GREAT. Looking forward to more updates on this bird.
BTW....Love that color on the Hakone!! What color is that?

What color is that? No updates until I get decals. Once I have those I can decide what paint goes on. The Hakone is called "British racing green" but since it is a pearl coat the actual colour can change dramatically depending on the light. The picture I posted is one of Toyota's promo shots so they got just the right lighting (and probably a little shopping).

So the correct way to say it is “Hachi Roku”? Hakone is pronounced "Ha-Ko-Ne". Not "Hay-Ko-Nee". Toyota is really Toyoda, but they must have decided Toyota rolled off the Western tongue better. I wonder if Mazda was actually "Matsuda"? And WW II era aircraft manufacturer Kawanishi changed their name to…Shin Meiwa, which I believe has been changed to Shinmaywa. At least Mitsubishi and Tamiya never changed their names!
