Hobby Lobby stopped carrying Tamiya Extra Thin Cement awhile back, but now carries the Mr Hobby line Mr Cement S liquid model cement. Has anybody here used this stuff, and if so, how does it compare to Tamiya Extra Thin? I mainly ask because the closest Hobby Lobby is much closer than the closest real hobby shops are, and if I need supplies, it’s a much easier errand to run.

I can't tell much difference between the two.
I switched to using Tamiya's airbrush cleaner as my cement of choice, it's the same thing as Extra Thin and you can buy it in the 250ML bottles for almost the same price as one of the bottles of Extra Thin.

I use MEK( Methyl Ethyl Ketone) from Lowes. It's exactly what Testors Liquid cement is. After I bought the first small jar (Testors) I read the label on the back and it said it was M.E.K. That was 20yrs ago. I went to Lowes and picked up a gallon can for $10.00 (at that time...it's a little more now...but not much) and are still using it. I've, maybe, filled my little bottle W/brush 3-4 times in 15 yrs. I still have 3/4 of that gallon, easy. That one Gallon can will last a lifetime.

They are all different mixes of different chemicals but as long as it melts plastic any of them including straight MEK will work about the same.

I stopped using Testors liquid cement about 10 years ago after I dropped an assembly glued together a day or two previously with that stuff onto my work area floor. It popped apart like it had been assembled with sugar water. I haven’t used Testors liquid cement since then. I have zero faith in that product.
Like I said, I’m looking for something that I can grab close and quick. I had heard about the Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner, but haven’t seen much of it at either of the local shops. I’m not much of an online/mail order guy. Go to the store and get what you need…

I use MEK( Methyl Ethyl Ketone) from Lowes. I have bad experiences with that stuff. We used to use that on Hueys when I worked on them and I found myself working in a confined space with it. I had to be drug out from underneath the helicopter by two people as I couldn't get out myself. Maybe that's what's wrong with me...

I switched to using Tamiya's airbrush cleaner as my cement of choice, it's the same thing as Extra Thin and you can buy it in the 250ML bottles for almost the same price as one of the bottles of Extra Thin. I have heard about the Tamiya airbrush thinner thing. I'm heading down to the LHS this Saturday, so I'll give it a try. I am very picky about my liquid cement. I found Tenax to have great holding strength, but it evaporated too fast to wick any distance. The skinny bottle led to several spills, until I smarted up and placed it in a small, fat roll of masking tape. Testors cement works okay, but loses its potency quicker than the others I have tried. The smell changes noticeably as it weakens. I still use it to tack small bits on, when I need a little time for alignment. When I first tried Gunze Mr Cement S, I knew that I had found my perfect liquid cement. It wicks like crazy (sometimes a little too much), bonds strongly (for tight joins the less cement used the better), and it dries quickly. I found Tamiya's cement slightly inferior to Gunze's product, but it is more readily available here. I have also tried Gunze's Mr Cement Deluxe (yellow cap), but do not recommend it. It is citric acid based I think, so it has low tack strength and slow drying time. It's kind of like that Testors black bottle glue with the long nozzle applicator, just a bit more runny. BUT, it is great for texturing armor. You apply a bit onto the surface, then stipple with an old brush till you get the level of texturing you want. I think the cement itself starts to build up, making that wonderful cast texture.

Thank you G for that first hand experience review! Looks like I'll pick up a bottle of each type at Hobby Lobby when I can, because there are several older armor kits my stash that will need cast texturing when I build them. That's exactly the sort of information that I was wondering about!

No problemo Stik! Use a small brush to apply the cement near areas you don't want textured, to allow greater control. And then glob on the cement over larger areas and start stippling. It's effective, super easy, and fun to do!

It's effective, super easy, and fun to do! Yes it is fun! I remember having to do multiple coats to get it right on my old Tamiya KV-1 and Centurion. I've used Mr Surfacer more recently on several projects. I have plenty of old nylon paint brushes perfect for the task.
