Hi all So now the studies are pretty much out of the way I have some time to share another significant build from during my time away. A member of another forum I am on died almost four years ago very suddenly and far too young (mid-50s). Although I had only just come across him, he was very well known in the British modelling community. He was famous for having a huge stash - around a 1,000 kits at the time of his death. These went to a British veterans charity called Models for Heroes. They support veterans with their mental health issues and have found model making to be very theraputic. He was equally famous for never building out of the box. He was also well known for encouraging people to push themselves beyond their comfort zone but in a helpful and constructive way. In honour of his memory, we had a 'tribute' Group Build, with well over 30 forum members taking part. I decided to join even though I hadn't been on the forum that long. My base model was the ancient 1971 mould Tamiya Pz II with DAK figures. I had originally bought it as a simple introduction to 1/35 but given that he liked to push people, I then pushed the boat out and spent far, far more on AM parts than the kit actually cost. I actually still haven't fully finished it, as it will be part of a diorama but it was significant for the following reasons: - My first 1/35 kit;
- First scratch weld seems, as they were missing from the turret. Nothing major to most people but a revelation to me at the time;
- My first use of individual link tracks (Bronco replacing the kit's rubber band tracks);
- Major hacking about of the base kit (mainly the removal of stowage box);
- My first major use of PE (Eduard), in part to correct the parts I'd hacked off.
I also bought replacement metal barrels (Aber), which were very nice. Paints were mostly Vallejo Model Air and I was going for a fairly subtle dusty/warn look. I really am still very pleased with this and so I hope you enjoy it! ATB. Andrew This comparison shot with bottle of TET and 1/72 Tiger II gives you an idea of just how small a Pz II actually was.

That is one to be proud of, Andrew. Ya, the AM parts do push the investment envelope through the roof at times. Question: who was the builder, I didn't see a name. Great tribute!

That DID turn out well Andrew. The paint and weathering are all top notch as is the addition of all the detailing. Weld seams are still a mystery to me but I'll be learning as time progresses. Fantastic finish up on this one.
You're right....I didn't know just how small these tracks were.

Thanks Leon, glad you like it. Three more 1/35 giants have entered the stash, courtesy of my wedding anniversary last year but so far they're still boxed up. That is one to be proud of, Andrew. Ya, the AM parts do push the investment envelope through the roof at times. Question: who was the builder, I didn't see a name. Great tribute! Steve Coming from someone of your ability I'll take that as real compliment. In terms of the AM parts, in hindsight it would have been much cheaper to buy a slightly better kit. But at the time I bought it, it was only meant for to have a crack at something larger than 1/72 and so I didn't want to waste the money, in case it didn't work out. - and then the memorial GB was launched. In terms of the modeller, his name was Simon Titterington. I only came across him about a year before his very sudden death when I joined the forum I mentioned. But it was very clear from the reaction that he was very well known, certainly in the UK. He was apparently on the Military Modelling website before it closed and before joining the one I'm on now. He was only 54 only at the time of his death. Thanks again. That DID turn out well Andrew. The paint and weathering are all top notch as is the addition of all the detailing. Weld seams are still a mystery to me but I'll be learning as time progresses. Fantastic finish up on this one. You're right....I didn't know just how small these tracks were. Thanks Joe!!! It DID turn out rather well didn't it? I was going for a dusty, rather than dirty look. As always I can look at it now and find faults but for my first 1/35 tank, I really am very pleased with it. As you say so small.....and to think they were the spearhead of the BlitzKreig. The below snip is taken from the Tank Museum YouTube talk on it and as you can see it's not much taller than their Curator, David Willey. I've seen him person and he's about the same height as me (6 ft). Wikipedia says an Ausf C was 6' 6". Thanks again chaps! Andrew

Nice to see when an old Tamiya dame is given so much love. I'm curious about the blankets and their texture: what are they made from?

The blankets are actually those little glass cleaning cloths you get in those little packets. It's the first time I had ever used them....needs a bit of practice as I started dragging them fibres as I painted them. But they show a lot of potential. Thanks again. Andrew

Wow, nice work! Is this the ancient kit? Or the newer tooling?

Glad you like it, it's one of the few kits I take to shows to display. Dupes - it is the ancient 1971 original, albeit it was a new run in a new boxing. All things considered it went together very well. Thanks again gents! ATB Andrew
