Good thing I work from home, so I was able to sneak some time in at lunch. The sprues are for the tank only. I will show the crane later. Want to keep it bagged up since I am an expert at losing parts Step one was really simple. Step 2 starts to get tricky because the instructions are not taking painting into account. So I am gluing F1 and G52 together because they are both red. G50 is grey. Makes life slightly easier. I really like interior kits because you get to paint along the way which breaks up the construction and helps stop burnout. I know most will never be seen again, but I really enjoy building and painting and seeing at least a representation of what the crew saw. Until next time...      |

thank everyone! Small progress update. Disregarding all instructions trying to make subassemblies to make painting easier Thats why I listen to punk rock while building. Ain't no stupid instructions gonna to tell me what to do! You can tell when they designed this kit they wanted the fit to be perfect and tight. Which it is mostly, but I have had to remove some plastic here and there. When building this kit, test fit everything. The hull top and bottom have the best fit of any kit I have ever seen. They just literally fall together with zero misalignment or gaps. It brought a tear to my eye when I saw it. Wow! And I thought that the old Bandai 1/48 kits had great interiors…. This one is over the top! You really need to see it in person to appreciate it. It is simplified in construction only. Lots of detail and very crisp. any ways, here are some progress pics       |

Man all those interior bits are just screaming for paintwork to bring out all that detail! This is like a full interior big bomber kit, where it’s a shame to close all that work inside.

I simply couldn't believe all of the details that are on the sprues. When I opened the box to mine I was BLOWN AWAY by all of the parts. Just endless it looks like. And we haven't even talked about the crane yet........

Got as many sub-assemblies together as I could to try to keep from gluing painted parts together. This Stynlrez black and I need to let it rest for the next 24 hours Also trying out a DSLR camera instead of my phone camera. More of a pain but I think it will be worth it.  |

Here is a little something I do to make shell casings look a little more realistic. I base coat with AK 3rd gen brass. His it with a hairdryer and then mix up some brass with a tint of grim brown and somewhere between a wash and filter right at the end. Makes the shells look a little bigger for me   |

I never thought 48th armor could have that much detail. Truly opens many doors for a cross genre dio. Simply awesome. Nice work on the shells Dennis those look real...had to do a double take. That it does. Back in the 70’s, there was a decent amount of 1/48 armor available, between Bandai and Aurora. The Aurora kits were klunky, and the Bandai kits with their full interiors really were pushing the limits of mold technology at that time. Then they all went away. Fast forward 20 years or so and Tamiya brings back the genre with a vengeance. And those new kits are sweet! But they stick with only WWII subjects for so long, and have only scratched the surface of post WWII subjects. Hobbyboss even jumped on the bandwagon with lines of T-34 and Sherman variants that Tamiya did not cover. If all the 1/48 kits now available had come out back in the 80’s, I think that I would have stuck with 1/48 across the board. Like you said, it’s makes for some great cross genre diorama possibilities. A Storch alongside a DAK Panzer spearhead showing Rommel conferring with the tankers. A Blackhawk or Kiowa doing something similar with Abrams & HMMWVs… Sherman’s rolling onto an airfield full of Japanese fighter wrecks… |
