Picking up from the "Duals" thread, this is a Tamiya hull and Takom turret, and I'm building a Magach 3 based on an M48A2C, converted/updated by the IDF in-house. I made my own armored air filter housings rather than try and fix the two DEF Models parts I had that had gotten beaten up somehow somewhere. I did it just like the real things were done, a skin of 1" or so armor plate over the old side loader housings. I used a pair of Academy housings and .020" plastic sheet. I still have to add the hinged outer covers. Also begun are the fenders and braces, partly because it made sense to do them next and partly because I needed some fender there to locate and size the filter housings. My housings are just about .030" taller than the DEF parts, exactly what I wanted since I've always thought they (the DEF parts) looked too squat based on pics and their relationship to the fender mounted tool boxes. While I was noodling the fenders and such I also finished up the rear hull and engine doors. IMG_3927 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3926 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3928 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3925 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I know there's probably an easier way to do all this (start with a Dragon kit maybe) but where's the fun in that? And good news, I only have enough Tamiya parts to build one more whole model.

I always enjoy watching how you use good old fashioned Evergreen to do much of the basis of your enhancements, replacements, conversions…

Scratchbuilding at its finest right here and you sure know how to bring a good build together with it.

Fenders are coming along. Center sections about done, nuts and bolts still to be added to the fronts, then on the the rear sections. It's pretty much all .020" and .010" card stock. I had some sag going on the fronts and rather than correct I decided I liked it so I kept it going. It's evident in a lot of pics. Now you got my eyes glued to this too! Keep up with the amazing work! Why do you keep gluing your eyes to people's builds? It has to be very hard to build around them.

Whee!!! Okay, rear fenders creeping rearward. IMG_3932 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Two books showed up today, Magach Tanks of the IDF Vols 2 & 3 by Dr. Robert Manasherob. Good info, and I hope I don't have to redo anything.

I've been through that before where I've been at a certain point in a build and have to go back and redo things after getting new information. lol Keep at 'er Russ. She's lookin' good.

Lucky me, the grills are close enough to not need anything other than deleting a hinge on each side and adding a lifting loop. Also, my front fenders were drooping so bad I had to do some work there and add some "hidden" wire supports but I'm okay now. Rear fenders are finished up, more small bits added and headlights on and brush guards made. It's close. IMG_3961 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3960 by Russel Baer, on Flickr

Man it looks like you've replaced a good 1/3 of this kit with parts from elsewhere or scratchwork. Very impressive!

That is some epic scratch building skills Russ. Really remarkable work. Certainly getting some lessons on M48 variants for sure. Superb workmanship my friend.

Carlos, it's the basic hull and a few bits from the kit, some other Tamiya parts and a bunch of the white stuff. My happy place.... Thanks Joe. I like scratchbuilding, something I started when I was a pre-teen since I didn't have a lot of model money to play with, so I'd make stuff out of whatever materials I had on hand or could re-purpose. When I discovered Evergreen stock I was in hog heaven. That, and getting ahold of the first Shep Paine book that introduced "gizmology" put me on the road.

Great job on straightening the drooping fenders out with the unseen “supports” Russ. When a guy has as much time invested as you do this build the imagination goes into overdrive in coming up with ideas to make it all work. Getting closer and closer bud.

Lots done since the last pics, gee whiz. The turret is nearly done and I think I'm done on the hull as well. I filled the turret basket with a copy of the DEF Models bagged camo net and a few other items made from Milliput, added a couple of old soft bags and did the commander's MG mount so I think all I need are the footman's loops. Scary, that means paint next. I hate painting. IMG_3970 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_3969 by Russel Baer, on Flickr

How in the WORLD do you paint all of that baggage in the basket THROUGH the bars of the cage. That's baffling the heck out of me how that can even be accomplished. It's like building a ship in a bottle!!

I am huge fan of stowage on vehicles so you truly have made me a happy man this morning! Love those stowage sets from DEF and Blackdog.
HA! Painting is not my favorite part too but I can't wait to see your M48s painted soon.

Here's a pic just for you, Joe. IMG_3984 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I use a junk brush and get a darker shade of my base color worked into the cracks and gaps, all those places that are impossible to get with a rattle can. Then once the base coat is in, I do the detail painting, this time with a fine brush and washes. It works, and for cases like this where soft stowage is bulging through gaps in a rack or basket and there's just no way to add the stowage later it's the only way.

It's the best way I've come up with, but I did try something new on an older Magach2 in the case the other day. The inside of the basket was empty and I wanted to put 'something' in it, so I mixed up some Aves 2-part putty, squirted in a few drops of Vallejo khaki and mixed it in, then rolled the putty into the tube shape I wanted for the bagged camo nets so commonly carried. Once the item was rolled, formed and placed into the basket, I did some minor sculpting where the bends were sharper to show some wrinkles and let it dry, already the correct base color. When dry, I did a dark wash, then highlighting and presto, stowage after the fact. It came out well enough, and since I did it on an older model that will never see a show, I'm calling it not only good enough but a method I may use again. I'm letting this one sit for a day or two while I fiddle with another project (a straight up Magach 6 using an AFV Club hull and Legends turret) so I can do two things: one, percolate and make sure I have all the construction done, and two, wait till I can get up early enough to paint, or at least get primer on. It's just too hot to paint outdoors now. The paint tends to dry between the can's nozzle and the model in 105 degree air, leaving a very pebbled finish, so I have to spray in the early morning, before it gets above 85 or so.

I'd kinda like to see the results of that Russ.
