Strange Fish
What strange fish are these That wash ashore at Normandy? Olive drab and khaki soaked In hallowed tides, a bitter fate, On shores, they rest to never woke, Of Crimson flows, of sounds abate Once, they swam free in faroff lands, With lakes, streams and beaches aplenty, Splashing, frollicking with abandon, These souls, these teens and twenty Yet now, the only noise be heard, From salted gear lapping, seeping Upon dark furrowed earth, Amid those precious sleeping May a prayer of thanks be given To them and those of the living, They know not of their fallen brethren Who have given way in sacrifice, To rise from battle, to immortal heavens.

When I graduated from college in 86, my best friend and I went on a backpacking tour of Europe for a couple of months. One of the highlights of that trip for me was getting off the train in Bayeux France and walking the 10km to the DDay beaches along the same road the allies came up.
God bless those men and their sacrifices.
