Is she missing some masts? If I recall, admiralty models were built to show the general layout and salient features of a proposed ship to the potential customer. As such, they were not necessarily 100% complete. So modern wood sailing ship models have a centuries old tradition behind them. I think that is why I find them so amazing, even though I would never attempt one myself.

Admiralty models have their own chapter in ship model history, and they came in different styles and scales, though the British introduced some sort of standardization over the time, especially when they started ruling, every new ship type needs a model. They can be planked or not, but very few having a hull frame that is truly according to the real rib layout. Most of the times it's just an idealization and the planking below waterline is left off for aesthetics. Same for the decks. But there do exist models with true to scale hull frames. Admiralty models can be half or full rigged, come painted and with ornaments or just in plain wood. The only one thing all have in common is, they never have any sails, not even if they are only reefed.

Cool to have do many knowledgeable forum members! You're too kind, I just try to share what I got from books. Unfortunately I don't have my library at hand at the moment, to give some good reading recommendations on this topic.

So THAT'S where 1/76 scale came from! To be more precise 1/50 or 1/48 became pretty much the standard, depending whether metric or imperial system. But earlier models do exist in smaller scales.

Hi Philo! Just got here a day or so ago. Started checking around and saw your ship. Very nice work there. I've built a few AL ships and they are not the easiest to work with. I'm working on the AL Bluenose II now and will post some photos as soon as I learn how.
Keep up that great work. Looking forward to seeing more.
Stay safe. Jim
