That’s a great looking build of Yamato! You have really knocked it out of the park on this one! There is a good book titled, “A Glorious Way To Die” about the Yamato’s final voyage.

HELLO ALL! I have returned with the completion of a long term project. The "New Tool" Tamiya Yamato with the Pontos update set. Model was painted in Model Master "KURE" Gray and weathered with oils. I tried to depict her as if she was picked out of the water and placed in my display cabinet. All barrels , including the hundreds of AA guns are all turned brass and provided in the Pontos kit. She is shown in her "Ten-GO" mission appearance but just prior to the final modifications. One of the mods was the coal staining of the wooden deck. I stained mine with a wash. Now back to a car model, and something a little easier on my eyes and nerves. Man................I don't even know where to start Gil...... First off....a BIG welcome back to you. I've been meaning to contact you and have been absolutely SWAMPED with either priority life events that have happened or just dogpiled at work. In any case, I'll be catching up with you soon pal. Secondly, you've been talking about this one for a long while and I know at least part of the journey that you went through with this one. I can only imagine 1.) the new curse words you may have learned along the way, 2.) the new skills that you acquired along the way and 3.) the newfound sense of joy that you had to go through knowing that you finally got this one done. What a true beauty in every sense of the word and your efforts are to be commended my good friend. You can be looking for a fella named modelcrazy to comment on this one as he is a ship builder himself. Way to go Gil.....way to go.

Welcome back Gil! If it's of any comfort for you: she is looking outright awesome. The recon planes alone are little gems of their own. Really a masterpiece.

That is one fantastic build of the Yamato Gil. Incredible effort on your part. The results of those efforts have paid off in your remarkable results. Excellent work on the painting and weathering. You achieved a really nice realistic look. The PE and rigging are very well done and really give your Yamato life. Really outstanding work Gil. Be proud of this one.

Wow, what a response, and I respect your efforts to comment. Looks like this forum is alive and well! Good to be back! This was certainly a labor of love, but took way too long. Just another tidbit for you...If you look closely at the stern where the aircraft are, it is interesting to note that this portion of the ship is actually a concrete pad, thus the stress cuts and weathering.

How interesting about the stern concrete decking. I wonder if that offered any sort of design advantage?
Just curious if you would know, but did Yamato carry any float planes aboard for her final sortie?

I am thinking more weight above the stern for the propellers and possibly better stability. No, I believe that there weren't any seaplanes, the rear mast was removed, and I believe most of the boats were excluded as well. I wanted to display these so I used a bit of builders license....(she was in the process of her modifications just prior to her final sortie...)

Georgious build. I admire another ship builder that can drag his creation past the finish line. Something always seems to need to be done. The rigging is sopt on! Along with the weathering. Just an overall magnificent build.
