Monogram 1/48 F-84F Thunderstreak

I built this for a GB on another site…
This is a 2000 re issue of Monogram’s 1984 vintage F-84F Thunderstreak. I built it OOB, including using the kit decals, which gave me the only real problems with the kit. I used AK Real Color for the overall Aluminum and was very happy with that stuff. It handled masking great as well as clean up of enamel overspray using thinner with zero problems. Other NMF tones were done with Model Master Metalizer and Tamiya lacquers.













This boxing also includes a Mk.7 Nuclear bomb and a cart…

Thanks John! It’s funny, for many years I never gave a second thought to the aircraft or vehicles of the Cold War between the Korean and Vietnam Wars, but in the past several years I’ve developed a fondness for those subjects. The more that I dive in, the more I like them.

And the F-84F had a less than stellar career with the USAF, but still a big fan considering the aesthetics

The Thunderstreak is like the Starfighter. Lots of time with foreign air arms or the Air Guard… brought back to active duty in the USAF when needed, but never accepted due to its basic single role capability.

TJ, I was never really a fan of the Thunderstruck until this project. Then it sure grew on me.... Of course I do love many other Republic aircraft...



Joe, that's blasphemy! monogram made some of the best detailed kits before they merged with Revell. Tamiya and Hasegawa were playing catch up back then... Ad yes, a ZM base, I love those... great for scenes like this or contests.

Gonna love those F-84s especially yours! Usually pretty eye catchy especially its painted stripes. I am trying to figure out what yellow canisters or tanks on its rear belly are...

Thanks Andy. The yellow bottles on the bottom are a JATO pack. F-84s were notorious for using up runway on take off when fully loaded. Monogram thoughtfully included them in this kit.

Beautiful job on a less than ideal kit! I built that kit decades ago after reading Bach's "Stranger to the Ground", I know it has some issues.

The F-84F is a plane that time bypassed quickly, the swept wings on the F-84 was a bandaid fix, The F-86 quickly surpassed it.

But I love the F-84. I've seen a few over the years. It's a sleek, sexy, aircraft.

Thanks Mach. The only Thunderstreak I remember coming across was at Lackland AFB. The swept wings were indeed something of a bandaid fix for the Thunderjet, but it did fill a role that the Saber never could. Long range tactical strike. The Saber never had the range or payload capability to carry the early A-bombs for a useful range. The Saber was an air superiority fighter with a secondary air to ground role.

The Aluminum finish on this is perfect! AK Real Color huh? I am going to have to give this line of paint a whirl

Thank you Brent. I can sure recommend their paints for airbrushing. My next goal with the AK Aluminum is to use it as a base for a multi tone/panel effort, like I did with the drop tanks.

Well I did find that both AK Real Color and Model Master Metalizer performed very well with masking when applied over a gloss enamel base. It sure gives me some more options for future NMF projects.

Thanks Mongoose! I'm happy with the end results here. This was mostly a project to try out new stuff and methods for NMF builds.
