Fantastic setting here, ultra realistic in weathering and layout.

WHOA! That's beautiful vignette you have built! This is what I love to build too with just one or two figures on a base. I am looking forward to see more of your work here.

That's some pretty fancy work for it only being your first WWI build Phil. Good work on the base, tree and figure as well. What was your technique/ materials used on the base?

Thank you for the comments. The base is insulating foam which I cut out to whatever shape takes my fancy. I prefer to keep them small as I am not really into big displays and I hate having dead ground so to speak. The foam is about 4cm in thickness and I purchased it from a local hardware chain. I can't remember the size but so far I have done 11 vignettes with it and still have enough for another 6 or so. I simply glue the cut out foam to a piece of 3 ply and sand it all smooth with a disc sander before shaping the top with a large knife. Once I am happy with that I then cover the top with plaster of paris (I know old school) and include things like rocks etc. When dry, I just cover with white glue, sand and small stones. Then its down to painting after I have undercoated everything black. I use a combination of airbrush and brush to try and get the look I am aiming for. For me, weathering a finished model and painting a constructed landscape is what I enjoy the best. Oh yeah, the trees are pieces of weathered branches I find on a rocky headland near where I live. I pick up just about everything with a view of using it at some stage.

Vignette, diorama. Whatever you call it it is amazing!! Great job and thanks for explaining your process too. The base looks fantastic as does the model. I love early armor. So unique and so cool. Really great work all around!!

I hear you picking up things or seeing things that could be of use later on down the line. It's something that we modelers seem to all have in common.
