Silly putty, yep silly putty doesn't leave marks , make a hard edge, and is reusable. Andy has a similar product on his website as well. Comforms over detail and around curves. Not much to report sheesh. A TON OF ROAD WHEELS This^^^^^ Thick silly putty give a bit of a haze at the edge but not a real soft edge. Thin gives a sharp edge. And boy oh boy these pics show I need to do some dusting! Can't see it in real life. LOL! The joys of an open shelf display! Think of it as natural weathering. I'm gonna give the silly putty a go I think. The other thing I was considering was liquid mask. I'm a little wary of the silly putty pulling off small parts (like those spare track brackets) if I have to go over them. Oh well, it wouldn't be the 1st time... or 2nd or 3rd time that I've glued those damn things back on.

There isn’t much grip to the putty.

Yeah I think I’d take the lesser of the two evils and go with the putty Dave.

Mine is an easy 10 years old and still going strong. Just knead the paint in well when you are done and it just becomes part of the putty.

I estimate the Ak real colors are lacquer based and thus less responsive to HS chipping than acrylics?

I estimate the Ak real colors are lacquer based and thus less responsive to HS chipping than acrylics? I'm sure there are a lot of factors that play into it. That being one. I also started chipping ~2w after I sprayed the DY, so it was pretty nicely cured. I'm sure paint thickness has a bit to with with it as well. Once the water was able to infiltrate cracks and scrapes it went more to plan. But I kept the chipping fairly minimal to medium. In a way, I like the wear effect from the sanding better than chips. I think they both have their place, but I would tend to do chipping more on hard edges than flatter surfaces. At least for this situation.

This is one reason why I choose to use Tamiya acrylic on the wood parts of my Berge build. A quick trial showed me that there was zero hope of getting the effect I wanted with the AK paints. They are very durable and there was no way they were going to come off in large areas.

Quick update: I have the base painting done. The silly putty escapade turned out okay for my first go with the stuff. I can see there is a little learning curve for the technique and getting a pattern that looks pleasing to the eye. It didn't even break off any of the PE or small stuff with some care taken.

In hindsight we probably should have gave more of the method than just yelling "USE SILLY PUTTY". I roll it out into lengths about the diameter of your average kit sprue and use those strips to delineate the edges. Then I just use some pieces squished flat to fill in around those edges.

Your camo came out awesome Dave. I am a disciple of Silly Putty. Magical stuff for masking. If you are not aware here is a helpful tip. When it comes time to remove it put your kit in the fridge for a few minutes. The cold Silly Putty will just pop right of and not "stick" to any parts or surfaces.

Dave, your camo came out GREAT!!! I haven't tried the new line of AK paint yet but I will one day.
Joe, thanks for reminding me about the fridge trick as it has been years since I have used the silly putty!

Thanks, everyone. I am fairly pleased with how it came out. I think there is a ton of room for improvement though. (Like the shadow of brown around the green on the port side. Not too noticeable but I - and now you - know it's there. LOL) Quick update: I have the base painting done. The silly putty escapade turned out okay for my first go with the stuff. Yeah, that might be easier... I rolled it flat with a rolling pin, which was not easy. Then I cut shapes with the hobby knife. Your camo came out awesome Dave. I am a disciple of Silly Putty. Could possibly explain why it was so difficult to flatten out.

Dave, your camo came out GREAT!!! I haven't tried the new line of AK paint yet but I will one day. Joe, thanks for reminding me about the fridge trick as it has been years since I have used the silly putty! Those are the exact same paints I used on the Berge. They are great paints and I will buy again. Also a GREAT example of why you can't use pictures to determine the exact colour. Lighting and camera make these look like they were done with totally different colours when the reality is they would be identical if side by side in the same conditions.

This is a great update and a display of the paints available today that seem to be even better than what was available just 10 years ago it seems like. Great camo work and again on your paint work Dave. Glad the silly putty "played nice" for you.

I totally agree that lighting can have a huge affect on what the pics show. So many other factors too... I used the paints in the pic above, but I have 3 DY and 3 RBs. The one on the far right looks more like yours in the photos. But I haven't tried the others outside the bottle. I also have LED lights. The wavelength can make a big difference as well. But I agree, these paints, properly thinned, spray and look pretty awesome. This is a great update and a display of the paints available today that seem to be even better than what was available just 10 years ago it seems like. Great camo work and again on your paint work Dave. Glad the silly putty "played nice" for you. Thanks joe! I agree - everything has evolved for the better. I mean, if you have the means, you can print your own parts for God's sake.

Okay... so I'm getting close to calling this one done too. I am not really going to weather it much as I want to "finish" by the end date and have a clean bench for the Butcher Bird Group Build. I basically have the tracks to finish and install and a few touch ups here and there. We'll see how much time I have to commit over the next week. Let me know if you have any questions about what I did or used. I know I have been remiss when it comes to posting that stuff on this one... and I apologize.
So, here's where we stand.
Merry Christmas everyone!

So, I am calling it done... I didn't do a whole lot of weathering, to say the least. Though, it still came out a little used looking. The kit itself was pretty good overall. A few nitpicky things that I mentioned along the way were a little annoying, but nothing we don't deal with on a regular basis. If you like, let me know what you think. I'm open to any questions, comments or suggestions.
Enjoy and Happy New Year!

I can’t get over these paint jobs like this Dave. I’ll be looking forward to seeing you build a 190 up as I’m sure I’ll be alble to learn a thing or two from you. Speaking of which, that’s just right around the corner ain’t it. Just gotta wrap my Vette up so I can clear my bench.
