Just using up old parts, pieces from recycled models and stuff from kits I bought at shows 'cuz they were cheap, I combined the basic hull from a Tamiya M41, some really crappy SpadeAce Merkava 4 tracks and the upper hull and parts of the lower from a Takom Bergepanzer 2A2. It's kind of like a 3/4 scale Bergepanzer... I don't know if I'll do it IDF, French or Flatonian Space Marines. The basic hull: IMG_4092 by Russel Baer, on Flickr And then I took about 1 1/4" out of the Takom upper hull, put a "floor" in it so I could set it on the M41 lower hull. I grafted in the front part of the Takom lower hull to get the dozer and winch and kind of fudged in the rear hull parts, to be finalized later. IMG_4093 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_4095 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I've got some work to do on the lower hull still... IMG_4094 by Russel Baer, on Flickr Engine deck still needs some thought too: IMG_4096 by Russel Baer, on Flickr As it sits it makes me think of the tracked buggy in "Lost in Space". Short, wide and kind of tall. I may have to shorten the crane boom too, but I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

It's how I fix Modeler's Block..... Message from the Flatonian Space Marines: they don't need any Bergepanzers, they need Jagdpanzers. Forget the crane boom, there's room mount some mech-mangling monster weapon strapped to the starboard side of the superstructure. Those "Red Alert" tanks from Border have been getting all the attention, it's time for the scratch builders to strike back with something which makes their so-called "Big Guns" look as pathetic as Putin's puny p-n-s... Cheers, M

Oh YES! Or the "Mother-of-all-Flashlights", some sort of mega-laser. Whatever you choose, I'm now thinking you could use the crane mount for something humungous that rotates aft and sticks out over the back of the hull in travel mode, but when in action has sufficient elevation to have an anti-dropship capability. Of course, that would require some sort of large-and-complicated search-and-track sensor array which would use that circular cupola as a heavy-duty mount... Or just ignore my ravings and do your own thing, it's your own creation and I have a habit of dreaming up crazy stuff there's no chance of being built by myself... Regards, M

No AMX-13 parts yet, I didn't feel like working on the M60 I started a while ago and the other stuff on the "pending" shelf wasn't doing it for me, so I decided to play with this. Firstly, I wasn't happy with the tracks and drive sprocket, for a couple of reasons. One, the tracks are the old and failed "Spade Ace" brand. The looked nice but ALL the links are parallelograms, not rectangles. Make sense? The result is they don't fit for sh.... well, you know what I mean. Oddly enough, I had another set of Spade Ace tracks for a T-55/62 that, ready? Didn't fit ANY T-55 sprockets I had on hand, including Tamiya, Trumpeter and Meng. They were all assembled and treated with nowhere to go. Well, in a fit of something, I tried them on a set of Skif sprockets intended for RmSh (T-72) tracks, and the pi=tch was very close. Some sanding and cussing and I had a decent fit, so I did it, and I like it better. IMG_4113 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_4111 by Russel Baer, on Flickr You may notice shock absorbers in there too, from the Takom kit I robbed the hull upper from. And down below, Hobby Boss Leopard supplemental armor to cover all the holes, and some bits to detail up the backs of the swing arms... IMG_4112 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I snagged some more of the old Verlinden US tanker figs in NBC gear and I'm thinking I may finally have a use for them.

Don't forget "Eye-gor"..... I can see why the good Doctor got such a thrill out of it all. I truly enjoy this kind of stuff at least as much, if not more, than building the same thing anyone else can by building what's in the box. Not to slight those that build OOB in any way, I just can't help myself sometimes.

I decided to make this thing an actual recovery vehicle but I'm still open on "whose"... I got to looking at all the cool gear stuck all over the exterior and that did it, so here it is so far. The biggest "problem" is making room for all the tools and such since I shortened the hull about an inch. Also, everywhere the "real thing" has spare tracks I'm doing the same thing, just using T-55 tracks. It's FUN! rotflmao. You guys are making me laugh, which I can always use! Since I have another couple of ideas for whiffles (what-ifs) I may just do some off-the-wall camo and develop a theme. It really is refreshing to not worry about whether or not the bolts on the widget brackets have the correct hex or square heads for the build period. And since I got the parts to get back on the AMX-13, that's exactly what I'll be doing next, correcting widget brackets. But then there's the Abrams hull with the Merkava 3 turret on the shelf, just winking at me....

Well, it definitely has German American lineage, so perhaps a camo scheme similar to those worn by the Bundeswehr on field exercises of mud or whitewash over Gelboliv or Olive Drab...

I'm pondering still, thinking of maybe a three-tone horizontal light to dark scheme like I did on the "AMX-31" I did earlier this year...this one: IMG_3866 by Russel Baer, on Flickr It's just funky enough to be fun but with all the tools and stuff, and the crane boom yet to come it would be difficult to do. The jury's still out.

Russ, I see this as a campy NASA planetary rover concept thing from the 60's.
Its freaking amazing whatever you end up doing with it.

It's all fun, if it's not, just crawl in the hole and pull the dirt in with you. rotflmao! Deep thoughts from Russ today. I've been staring at the AMX-13 too much, same old thing about not wanting to paint until I'm SURE I don't need to add anything else, so when I have modeling time I'm playing with this thing. It's mostly adapting the various tools and fixtures to the shortened hull and adding the intake screens/area for the engine. There's still a lot to add, and when it's all on it's going to be very busy looking. Does anyone make a 1/35 scale kitchen sink? IMG_4128 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_4129 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_4130 by Russel Baer, on Flickr IMG_4127 by Russel Baer, on Flickr The crane is only one sprue, good on that or I'd be worried. I'm still kind of toying with the idea of something wacky on the top/end of the crane rather than just the winch fairleads and hooks and stuff. As is, there's a bunch of very nice parts to this kit and a lot of them are part of the crane,

I just LOVE the look of this thing. I mean, it doesn't even have a big gun on it but it looks so dang BRUTAL!! I was a member of an M88 recovery vehicle crew in the Army and always thought the 88 was a pretty bad a$$ looking vehicle too. This is coming together in good fashion Russ. Love the detail work brother.

Hey Russ, just a rambling thought....instead of a crane, repurpose it a a giant wrecking ball. Be a twist in the recovery vibe. Just a sleepy thought, pay it no mind. This is so cool!

Crane is built, and I'm thinking a weird three-tone camo scheme. IMG_4185 by Russel Baer, on Flickr And while I was at the bench, "cleaning up" after my modeling frenzy, preparing for Winterblitz, I "found" some things forgotten, namely a barely started M2 Bradley that I just lost interest in. I also snagged some SpadeAce Leo 1 tracks at Winterblitz (I'm a sucker for metal indy link tracks) and while I was "cleaning up", started something else. My idea is for a Fast Attack/Recon Tank (yup, FART), kind of a chopped down high speed Bradley. Yee ha! So far: IMG_4186 by Russel Baer, on Flickr I will add a couple of return rollers. Sprockets are from the Takom Bergepanzer pirated and pillaged for the Bulldog, idler mounts from the POS HobbyBoss Leo 2 I struggled through a while ago. As soon as I'm back in town I'll get a separate build thread going.
