Build by fellow DAV-VVA brother member who asked me to weather it. It's a nice job I think considering his health. So this is the subject. I will post my method when I start it next week.

This should be neat to watch. You might also want to repaint the life raft floats and whaleboats, those should be in colors to match the surrounding areas of the ship.

I had him do the rafts in "sail color" so I can show wear through the canvas to match them in his image. The ship is going to be weathered as is was in 1945 /46 arriving at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard to get prepped for the Bikinni A Bomb tests. There is so much wear and dirt the tri-tone colors are barely visible. His pop was on her from 1943 to early 1946.

Man, that's going to be a TON of weathering involved to get that ship to look the part of what I'm seeing in that reference shot you posted Paul. I know if anybody can pull it off, you can. Really looking forward to seeing this all go down.

For lots of dated photos, check here on Navsource NavsourceThis is how she looked on her Dazzle scheme, Measure 31. She was repainted into Measure 21, Overall Sea Blue in the second half of 1945

First stage with the white tinted thinner dusted over the upper surfaces of the ship for sun fade and general faded/ chalky sun bleached look. Then a pin wash of raw umber and a light gray wash for accumulated stains in corners.

She was repainted into Measure 21, Overall Sea Blue in the second half of 1945 I didn't build it but I would have done it in the Measure 21. For the Operation Crossroads it should be Orange, which in its own way is kind of cool too. I'm just weathering it and putting on basic rigging. Some of his misaligned and missing parts kill my OCD, but he is happy with it. I do think the photo he has is ]end of war when it went to the Seealt Yard the Pacific for repairs and repaint in March 1945.

It amazes how much improvements we can see after a weathering job especially the details on the turrets are lightened up!

Id say you have a full arsenal of weathering tools to make this look amazing With those basic oil based colors you can blend to get the perfect shade to suit you. I use them mostly cut with white spirits to make washes, tint coats and streaks.

Got the off white tint on it and added the prominent rust from his photo there is still a bit more rust to add at the water line.. Last step next week or so is a alcohol streaking process.

So cool to watch the effects blend and then start to show off detail! I think i ended up with a bit of a shopping list looking at your weathering products too 👍 a few to add, plus I’m going to try out that tinting process. I do something similar called glazing for my figures and your technique looks to make that doable on a large ship. I’m looking forward to trying something new!

The final rust, weathering and medium Grey tinted flat clear is done. Now on to some very basic rigging. Paint and weathering matches her after pretty much non stop sea duty before she was quickly repainted at Manus Naval Yard in Papua New Guinea after the Iwo Jima invasion. The New York was used on convoy escort duty during most of 1942, although in November she and the Texas provided fire support for the Allied invasion of North Africa. The New York was used to bombard enemy positions at Safi on 8 November 1942.After this spell of active service the New York was used as a gunnery training ship in Chesapeake Bay for the first half of 1944, while in the second half she conducted three training cruises to Trinidad. Bombardment at Iwo Jima to Okinawa. The New York took part in the pre-invasion bombardment of Okinawa, starting on 27 March. This was the first of 76 consecutive days of action for the old battleship, in which she produced fire support to the troops on the island. During this period she was hit once by a kamikaze aircraft, but the Japanese aircraft bounced off after destroying the New York's spotting aircraft. On 11 June the New York set sail for Pearl Harbor, where the barrels of some of her worn guns were replaced. She was allocated to the force being gathered for the proposed invasion of Japan, but the war ended before this operation was needed
