Hello all! I'm totally new to the modeling world. Until earlier this year I didn't even realize how big the custom diecast world was until I began looking to have a 1/18 scale Larry Dickson 1978 Indy 500 car made. My dad had painted the original back then, as well as his 1979 car, and always wanted to have one made but just never really looked into it. I found some Indy diecast and memorabilia groups online and people pointed me in the right direction. The one pictured below was made by Andres Cadena. He used a McLaren M23 as the donor car and made modifications to to recreate a Penske PC-5. All decals were made by him as well. I was very impressed on how well he was able to recreate the pin striping dad had done from very few reference photos. The display that it is in was made by me over the past year. This was actually my second attempt as the first attempt.........we don't talk about that child. I am a complete newbie when it comes to woodworking or model creating but it came out ok I think. The "Larry Dickson" decal on the front glass was taken from the garage board for the backup car the team had that year. I just put it through photo shop and had the background removed. A nice person in a free photo editing group in Facebook cleaned up the "age spots" on the original and then just had the die-cut decal made. I plan on posing a thread of all the photos I took from start to finish making the display case. Super simple once you see it. A few mistakes on this one but definitely learned for the next one. It's all a gift from my sister and I to our dad for Christmas this year so as of writing this he still hasn't seen it yet. I'm sure he'll like it. What brought me to the site originally was finding a photo of a Tim Richmond Indy car model someone had built and was showing off on here. My dad also painted all version of Tim's cars for the 1980 and 1981 races. The sponsors would change throughout the month of May for many cars back then, so they would have sign painter (like my dad) come out and paint as needed. I had his 1980 car built by Stu Benford. The next display case I make will house this car, but I'm making it large enough to hold two cars this time. Will definitely post photos as it gets completed. Just cut the main frame boards today. Hope to get to know more people out there who can assist in the world of custom diecasts. I plan on trying my hand at converting some cars in the near future myself. I'm sure as time goes all I'll get to meet quite a few of you! Feel free to ask any questions you have!

Welcome! I’m from Shelbyville. I do a lot of open wheel modeling myself. Almost Grew up at the speedway. Great work building the display for your Dad’s gift. That turned out really well. And your dad clearly had some serious skill at painting. Those were beautiful race cars. I hope you take a shot at some conversions of your own in the future or maybe even a model kit? This is a great and helpful place for any questions.

Welcome to the forum, Rudy. Very cool displays you have there. There are several of us Hoosiers on this site. I'm from up north of Fort Wayne myself. Always glad to have another one on board.
