Of course I bookmarked this; this is a great project in the making! What's your method for choosing a subject? There's quite a range here! My Dad put himself through engineering school as a mechanic so there was quite an odd range of cars that would show up on weekends. I kind of feel that happening here in your "garage." One week it's a hot rod, next week it's American muscle and then there's... this! Cheers. My method is as varied as my interests. Open wheel Race cars are what brought me back to the hobby. I grew up around racing and the Indy 500 and I normally have a race car or two going (such as my Novi or recent Lola). Sometimes a group build decides the next kit, such as my FW-190 or this Rolls (being 1/16 scale). Sometimes it’s as simple as going to the stash and seeing what calls to me. The issue is I love almost anything automotive, I love airplanes too, especially the ones with pistons, I love ships and boats and I love sci fi. The kits in my stash mirror this eclectic mix of tastes. Group builds help me choose so I like to jump in on those where I can.

Well I spent some time on the engine this evening. As this was an open box kit with many parts cut off the sprues some broken bits and pieces are to be expected. Used some straight pins to replace several broken pushrods. Bandai did a nice job with the engine. Lovely bolt head details on all surfaces. This entire subassembly will be gloss black so it’s ready for paint. Other bits and pieces that attach to this are mostly brass and copper. Kit includes plug leads and looks to run them through. I’ll get those added after paint.

Great to see this one again. Nice progress on the engine! The engine really does have well defined detail on it

This is probably my favourite build to follow right now. This thing is going to be spectacular. That little bump up in scale makes so much more detail available right out of the box.

And you’re not kidding about the bump up in detail. It’s a super cool kit. I’m going to do some more work on it and if it stops raining get this engine painted so I can add the copper bits and pieces. I think it’s going to look pretty sharp.

That is a good looking engine. You've done some fine work on it so far. Gonna be sharp when you get that complete. Good to see some progress.

That engine is looking stellar so far without any paint Kyle. I just noticed......is that oil pan retained by bolts with backup nuts on the top side of the pan? That would suck to have to drop or install that pan in real life if that's the case.

Would on a modern car but on these you could reach both the top and bottom bolt/nuts at the same time with both feet squarely on the ground.

I have added it to my collection of references. Fortunately there are a ton of great examples still around. Even if none of the examples are probably quote period correct.

Pretty sure there were more pictures of these than when I was looking for 440s! Like you said though most are very bright polished and super clean. No doubt they would have been well maintained but if used day to day they would get very messy very quickly. They would have leaked fluids like sieves, had massive blowby and paved roads were a rarity so dust would be normal even on the best kept up examples.

Just imagine all the oils spewing out everywhere while Charles Rolls driver followed him along some dusty track to retrieve his boss and his balloon. What a mess that would’ve made.

I grew up around very old tractors so don't need to imagine I just need to remember! Even in that picture I posted if you look near the rear you will see it leaking a fair bit of oil from around a cover plate!

I have plans to hit anything around the oil pan with my oil flavored oilbrusher. Won’t show much on the enameled black pieces but the bare metal bits will look nicely stained.

Haven’t forgotten about this one either. Drug out this big old box and finished up painting the engine, radiator, transmission, exhaust and tank. Next up I’ll start adding some detail to the engine and hangin some bits off the chassis.
