"Yuke, Giant Robo!" (Go, Giant Robo!) Obligatory box shot: Proof shot taken on 12/31/23: Let's get into the build! First off, the kit is covered with rivets. The mold makers did their best to represent them around the one piece skirt armor using slide molds, but a few rivets were distorted in shape. Some aftermarket rivets to the rescue: Other areas also need some help:

The arm and leg cuffs have distorted rivets that are too much to ignore, so I'll have to either carve them to shape or replace them with suitable sized domes. I'm still mulling this one. The kit includes 1/20 figures of Ginrei (the girl) and Daisaku. Both are wearing too-short clothing that would get them sent back home if they were in school. Ginrei is an adult, so she can stay with her super mini dress. As for Daisaku, well like the Euro-trash woman in the VW Golf GTI commercial said "You get an F!"

Im not sure what the diameter of that rivet is but could you say, source some small plastic balls and sand them to half circles and glue them in place? Something like this?

That is the robot modeler’s way… Actually, it is fairly common to part everything out to test fit and determine the best assembly and paint sequence. Don’t worry, we keep track of what goes where. And this kit has some handed parts that you would not expect. The red cuffs on the arms and legs go on only one way. Not sure why the kit designer thought it was necessary.

I've never been too interested in these robot kits, but this thing looks epic. I am gonna love watching you build this. And so help me, if you drag me down the gundum rabbit hole and start collecting kits I'll need an intervention.

OK almost no modeling since the beginning of the year, but I have been doing a little here, a little there. Rather than going the aftermarket route, I decided to do it the hard way (i.e. the way that required modeling effort) to correct the oblong shaped rivets. Trimming and shaping is still in progress, but this is what I got done last night before bed. It's tedious, but it will get done. The other worK I'm currently doing is trimming and shaping to improve the molded detail.

Carving down the oblong rivets to round, looks awesome. I think I could have seen it either way, but the round is, more consistant. On the ‘too-shot’ min I dress, you could always paint her legs as tights and make it a little more PG-appropriate …personally, I like her legs bare (…that didn;t sound too creepy, did it?)

Working those rivets over looks like a test in patience that I am not sure I have. Looks great.

Well, I’m not particular about being PC or PG. She gets painted the way she’s supposed to look. The REAL problem is the BOY with the hot shorts. Ha ha. Plus my figure painting skills might not be up to doing the figures justice. I have marveled at those people who do the “cel shading” technique, where the model looks like it came right off the TV screen.
Carving the rivets might make me regret it, but that is the way. For me anyway. It’s “only” 16 rivets after all…

With the Gelf build out of the way, work now returns to Giant Robo. I found some 5mm plastic BBs from those little super-deformed Gundam kits with the spring-loaded weapons (BB Senshi) that were about the right size for the leg rivets. It is much easier to do it this way versus patiently carving away plastic. Now I need to find some smaller 3mm beads or something for the arms.

Work continues. I finally got around to trimming off the oblong shaped rivets from the arm and leg cuff areas. I still need to sand them down and source 2mm plastic beads for the arms. The leg cuffs were modified to allow them to be attached after painting (ato-hame in Japanese parlance). The arm cuffs mount differently so will require a different solution. I think I should open up those molded vents...

I could not get reasonably priced 2mm plastic balls, so I had to resort to smash molding the rivets from heated sprue. It's not perfect, but it will do. I need to bring out my alcohol burner, as the lighter's fire is too puny. Me want Hulk! Big Fire!

I've missed the last few updates on this one. That's some pretty dang good ingenuity going into this build with those fabricated rivets Neal. Great problem solving at work here buddy.
