This is coming along well so far Dave and I love the JG1 scheme you've chosen. You made the right move with the Eduard canopy. I did that on my D-9 that I built around 10 years ago and it was a good move as well...PLUS you get all the Eduard goodies that you can put into that canopy.

The canopy you chose looks like the detail (riveting ect) is much better as well. Looking forward to seeing this with color on it!

It looks like there is some mottling there, maybe it didn't print very well.

Not a long or detailed post, but I think you know what comes next...
Let me know if you want to know how I did something and I'll ramble on about it for a bit.

I've got the main camo scheme done. AK (RC321?) RLM76 (Version 2) MRP RLM74/75/04
I still have a lot to learn regarding airbrushing. I tend to get a lot of "spatter" - at least more than I want. With a little touch up here and there this turned out pretty well.

You're putting this paint scheme together very well Dave. Dang it man that looks good! I've come to really appreciate the marble foundation work on aircraft....particularly Luftwaffe birds that were usually left outside in the harsh elements.

You could have fooled me with being new to the airbrush. That paint looks fantastic. Now on to decals!!

Just that my skill in using it still isn't even close to where I wanna be. So, thanks, I appreciate the compliment! (I think this is my 6th serious attempt at painting a Luftwaffe fighter, and only my 4th in 1:48. I can't imagine right now how difficult it is to make 1:72 look right.) Yep, decals will be soon...

I like your paintwork, Dave. I have issues with mottling too, still new at that.

So, now that I am getting closer to getting the decals on, I wanted to ask you guys for your advice on the following: In building my last several models, I have a situation where it seems the clear coat is getting under the decals and actually accentuating the edges rather than making them disappear. I am attributing this to using lacquer based paints followed by a lacquer based clear coat. I think it just dissolves the paint slightly and works its way under the decal edge (maybe slightly altering the paint under the decal?) Anyway, I haven't tested using an acrylic based CC to see if it resolves this issue. Testing is needed, but I wanted to get your opinion, or see if you are having/had similar issues.
I've also finally taken some better "final" shots of some FW190s that I built a couple years ago. Is there any interest in me updating the original postings in WIP? 1:32 Hasegawa Fw190A-8

To the first question good buddy Dave. Personally I use an acrylic based clear for just that reason as it's a little easier on the cals IMO. I use MM acrylic gloss clear and after that MM acrylic flat clear and it hasn't let me down yet. I'll post a link to my Fw190 D-9 that I finished up 10 years ago to illustrate my point and those were some mean decals to pull off (Eagle Cals if I remember right) on the sides of the fuselage because it was one BIG a$$ cal for the side #s and markings. Tamiya...ish Fw190D-9 Secondly......HELL yeah I'd be interested in seeing the updates to those original postings!!! Bring it!! P.S. That thing is a BEAUTY!!

The markings and stencils are on! I forgot how long it takes to get them all situated. 109s are still worse, LOL. All of the markings and stencils are from the EagleCal #129 sheet. They aren't the thinnest, so they are resisting settling down into all the detail. I suppose there is some trade-off there. thin decals that will conform to anything are probably a lot more fragile and thus easy to screw up when handling. I could have gone for a little though. They look pretty good so far. I will be doing what I can to get hem snugged down some more though. (Yellow 5 6/JG1)

I love how all it takes is a set of decals to give an aircraft some personality and seems to take on a whole different look. I also hear you on the decal tradeoffs with the differences in thicknesses. Somewhere in the middle is what we all seem to want but it rarely ever works out that way. lol
She's lookin' good Dave!

Decals give it that splash of color. Now I've seen markings with the yellow Tatzelwurm. Ill have to get them to go with my red and green ones

Fine work sir 'tis a beauty
Late, perhaps, but in learning to do AC decals I've started using Alcad Aquagloss, which is an acrylic, for my shiny coat. Let it cure up for six to ten hours and it seems pretty impervious to anything I've put on it and hides decal film quite well.

What's the cadence? clear > decals or decals > clear? Yeah, I'll have to give it a shot next time. I still haven't figured it out to my satisfaction. It's really why I started to paint everything that I can. The Tatzelwurm is beyond my capabilities, especially at 1:48, so I just went with the whole decal set.
