handi, 406, kyle - without your support this would have stayed in a box and I would miss the opportunity to be a part of a community of modelers again. Two years away feels a lot longer. Now I feel so much better. Looking forward to following your work as well. Cheers!

Good for the soul. Yes. I want to reposition that top brass strip. Let’s see. It’s slightly off even though I measured and marked the surface.

I don't see the goof on the top strip placement, but if you say so, I'll take your word on it.

Silverado, Handiabled & Lyle - thanks for checking in and TGIF. I had a mishap at my friend’s studio where I sm able to test spray paints. I gave him a part to spray and the mix was off - using old paint. I have spent hours cleaning up. Any chance of using a cigarette lighter from a 61 Rambler?

Thank you, Stikpusher and Silverado! I made the adjustments last night. The measurement of the decal imagery is 5mm wide from top to bottom, but I neglected to factor in the width of the “yellow blob” which is present. I used 4mm instead. Everything works now. Here’s a repost of the Enterprise during first Smithsonian restoration to explain what I mean: Lyle! I remember the ‘65 American. Dad had a fondness for that car. A 440 I believe. Fun car.

Mom traded an older Rambler for a 1966 American. Great little car. Barely survived me learning to drive in it. I think my Mom then traded that for a ‘75 Pinto. No a/c and no radio. She kept that long enough that our son (born in ‘77) drove it.

Hello, everyone! I’m working at the studio today and tomorrow so my time is a bit limited. I have measured the other side (port side?) of the lower fuselage to add the brass rod. Hopefully tonight I’ll get 40 minutes to cut the two lengths and glue both in place. I also need to get a half bead for the nav beacon-observatory dome and for that I am hoping the jewelry store designers can provide something that will work.

Here's a soft focus shot of the observation dome (a piece of sprue from the kit that I reshaped by sanding and cutting) in place.

Looks like that bead is slightly off center somehow but it looks fine - just the hole in the bead itself. So I guess that means I glued it in at an angle. Well, phooey. I think it will stay that way. I will add a drop of CA to close the hole later.

Been there and done that with things going off kilter. With the '70 Vette I just finished up here, one of the last things that I had to do was install the outside rearview mirror which I had set up to be pinned in place. First, I got the glue on and put the mirror into place, and it fell over and got a dot of CA glue on my frickin' paint job. After wet sanding the affected area and fixing it, I went for round 2. That time I the mirror fell, and it bounced on the floor and disappeared. After 30 minutes of looking, I found it. Round 3.....juuuuuuuuuuust about had it in place and it fell into the interior and stuck to the floor just in front of the passenger's seat. After playing "Operation" for the better part of a half hour I retrieved it with no visible paint removal from the area where it stuck. Success was to be had on try #4 though as it just dropped into place like it was supposed to. Aint this modeling stuff fun??!!
Your progress here continues to be going very well despite some of the issues that you're having Bruce. Keep it comin' brother.

You know exactly what kind of situation I fell into for sure. The pit. There’s pleasure and then there’s also pain too. That was something an old girlfriend said once; I believe she meant it as a compliment although the time to ask her for clarification has long since passed. Let’s put an Amen to that. From Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon! The very first Wheel of Pain! Back on topic: a Production Photo of 33" version which I believe was taken as part of a series for GAF Viewmaster - there is still a small detail piece on either side of the hull I have to fabricate and then it's time to move up to higher grades of sandpaper - something you taught me well. Patience and more sandpaper. All the best, bud. Stormy weather last night in SoCal. I kind of missed it due to being sucked into the zone of building.

Bruce, is there any particular reason that you chose brass strips for the added detail instead of styrene? Or was is because that was what you had on hand at the time?

Lyle! Your encouragement brings light to the darkness when my ideas fail, here you’re like a fleet admiral from the Star Trek series. I sent you some graphics that I hope can be printed at scale. I’ll need to measure what I have to see if you can mathematically generate them. Carlos, you’ll always be Kahn or is it Khan asking very good questions. Alright. I have Albion tubing in stainless steel as well as some flattened pieces by a fella from Hungary (I can take pictures if you’re curious) that would each have worked well. Actually, better because these are closer to the diameter present on the 11 footer or 33 incher reference models but I had some fatter 0.20 brass rod leftovers that I felt could be “adjusted” through sanding to better disappear against the surface, and in addition yes, I wanted to use up the stock on hand. Also: this part of the model suffers from being too skinny; the hull is fatter and bifurcated and AMT simplified the exterior structure by eliminating this detail. The Enterprise has a belt band where she fattens out towards the deflector. In the past I have (1) ignored this (2) shaved away 1/32” and (3) built up the missing girth using Squadron Green. Method 3: Here I decided to embrace the kit simplification and add two slightly longer and wider brass rods to see if I could improve but not remove. I think so doing helps dramatically draw your eye from deflector to lower hull effectively as well as adding a more appropriate surface detail. There was a beautifully written “defense against rivet counters” I read online by a modeler who built a beautiful aircraft with such substitutions throughout. Not that I’m defending my ideas, but I appreciate how your question rolls my mind back and through a series of solitary decisions and supports me emotionally. You always know how to ask a good question and not make it feel out of place. From the first I really appreciated your ability to ask a proper question. I’m grateful for your wisdom, honesty and understanding of what it takes to build anything and always learn from your experience.

Supreme attention to detail Bruce! Thanks! I don’t want to get caught up here. There’s always a chance of going too far and take something away from the realities of the kit. A best seller for a reason. Good enough as is. A bit of a builder’s challenge.
