I can't even count the number of times I've picked that kit up off the shelf, but leave the store without it. It is something I'd like to build but it has always annoyed me that it isn't 1/72 or 1/35 to match the PT and E boat kits (1/72) or the PBR (1/35). I have the newer 1/72 little brother in my stash so I’ll be looking forward to this. Who makes that? As above the scale has always been an annoyance to me. 1/48 makes it something of an orphan for floaty things. It is also Revell. In stock at hobbylinc and probably elsewhere. Build away in 1/72

Your green water mark would be OK if it was lower and straighter. The watermarks develop when the boats are sitting so it would only show just above the waterline. Nice work on not putting rust on the hull or cabin since the were all aluminum and would not "rust".

Yeah, I sort of knew that, but was thinking that underway and on somewhat of a plane, it might be higher on the aft end. I'll have to work on it. Thank you for the information.

Boats are a little different since all the exhaust and oils that dirty up aircraft are behind them. They will collect grunge like mad sitting in dirty water (even in clean if there is time for algae or other growths to take hold) especially along the waterline where the crap and wash up and stick. When they are moving however there is not much time for stuff to take hold so even when bow up at speed nothing builds up. You can see where this one sits in the water.

Lyle, the Chief would not like how you're making his boat look! That thought did cross my mind…

Lyle, the Chief would not like how you're making his boat look! This is actually a valid point. Since they were Navy vessels a little more care would be put into their appearance. They were short mission, tender/base reliant, so there would be a pile of scrubbing and painting done between patrols even in Vietnam. They would certainly get cluttered and dirtied but never really really battered. This is about as bad as I could find and that may be more an issue with the green(?) paint it appears to done in not being up to the task.

I did tone it down quite a lot. Honestly, I was never really happy withit. I forgot to clear coat the craft prior to addding the warsh (wash) and it really grabbed the paint. Pictures later

Asking for a friend.... If one was to look for 1/48 scale rope and other stowage/accessories....where would they look? LOL This is something I have already looked up for my "someday" build. There is not a lot out there since most are for aircraft. Don't think the decks of these things were all that cluttered anyway. For rope any woven string of about the same diameter as the molded on ones would work. Tamiya has a nice set of drums and packs that could be scattered around the deck. Some of the old Monogram aircraft ground support figures could be used as a close enough version for crew. There are some Vietnam era aircraft figure sets where some could be made to work. Some tires used as bumpers are also a nice touch to busy it up. track48.com/accessories/armour-accessories/wheels/mp-originals-a48009-1-48-spare-tires-for-german-3t-4x2-truck

Asking for a friend.... If one was to look for 1/48 scale rope and other stowage/accessories....where would they look? For good stuff, perhaps a shop that specializes in ship model accessories... for basic line, a lot of sewing or craft stores have threads that are of the right diameter.

For good stuff, perhaps a shop that specializes in ship model accessories... for basic line, a lot of sewing or craft stores have threads that are of the right diameter. I have looked pretty much everywhere for detail up parts. Like Aaron said the 1/48 scale is sort of the red-headed step child for naval modeling. Other than a few PT boat parts there just isn't much out there. There are some pretty nice dual M2s that would be a huge upgrade for not a pile of money. For example: www.eduard.com/eduard/brassin/aircraft/1-48/lysander-twin-browning-machine-gun-1-48.htmlMost pictures don't show the decks crammed with stuff anyway. Some Jerry cans, a couple of drums and extra lines are pretty common but that is about it. The tires for bumpers are VERY common and really break up the hull lines and add some interest. Interesting helmet on the guy on the aft gun. Not really sure what that is.

Thanks. I’ll check out the guns. The tires intrigue me. I usually stick with OOB since no one will ever see these and, well, o struggle with pretty much all PE. But, this might be a good one to do. Gotta find tires from the 60s. Although I’m sure almost any tire would be used…truck, car, trailer, wagons. These all look to be different sizes
I don’t want to junk it up. If I had gotten this burr when I started, I would have removed the rope coils and anchors and replaced them.
That is a strange helmet. Almost looks like the it is from Spaceballs.

For the markings that come with the kit. PCF 10 obviously had a Skipper that was a bit more meticulous than some. The boat is very clean and uncluttered and the visible crew members are in proper uniforms. Note the very carefully painted out cabin windows. There is a bit of paint damage evident to the gunwales which is probably from bumping against things but overall very clean. Boat 94 is also pretty decent with very little on the decks. Note the mop and broom tied off against the end of the cabin these guys were not going to let things get messy! The crew seems to be a bit more relaxed in dress. The side looks to have the same sort of gunwale paint damage and perhaps some more staining than 10. Hard to tell if it is just wet sections and spray though. It could be that it saw more coastal use and is just salt stains. The exhaust staining and streaks on the stern are very obvious. The white streaks again look a lot like dried salt and the scenery and water look very much like a coastal area.

I replaced the kit .50's with some Verlinden guns on mine... unfortunately with Verlinden now out of business, you'll have to find another brand, since their remaining stuff went way up in price. But be sure to get the M2 style guns, and not the aircraft type with the perforated barrel jackets. There should be plenty out there in AM, since the M2 is used on everything from the Sherman of WWII to today's Abrams... and 1/48 armor kits now have plenty of AM out there nowadays...
