The 62nd All Japan Model Hobby Show will be held at the Tokyo Big Sight from 10/11/24 thru 10/13/24, with public access on the last two days. I attended the show way back around 2002. It's the second biggest hobby show in Japan, the Shizuoka hobby Show being the largest. In addition to the trade hall exhibiting the latest kits and whatnot, the show includes a vendor's hall with a wide range of sellers and merchandise. There are even guys sitting on the floor with mats (probably didn't want to spring for a table rental), selling stuff they made themselves. But this is no hippie junk craft fair, the majority of the merchandise I saw were of the highest quality. A friend bought a 1/700 Holland submarine from one of those guys sitting on the floor, and it was exquisite.
I had planned on attending the Shizuoka show back in 2020, but it all went turtle because of the pandemic. A friend regularly visits his relatives in Japan, so we decided to hook up at the show. I will be travelling with another friend and his wife, who have never visited Japan. Since it will be their first time there, the focus will be sightseeing and doing Japanese stuff. My friend's wife wanted to do a traditional tea ceremony in Kyoto, which sounds like fun. I have watched stuff about the ceremony, but never did it myself. They dress you up in a kimono and all that. They will even do the ladies' hair for that total experience. I warned them the tea is bitter and the little candies taste like nothing. My friend's father was American-French and his mother was from Japan, so I told him he needs to put on some bushy fake eyebrows and place Scotch tape over his eyelids, and then do his best Sean Connery / James Bond impersonation and say "As you can shee I'm Japanese!" And "Oh yes, I like sakee!"
We plan on flying into Osaka's Kansai Airport (the one that's sinking), staying in Kyoto for a couple of days, then heading over to Tokyo via Shinkansen (bullet train, but no not like the movie) to see the hobby show. We will fly out of Tokyo from either Haneda or Narita airport. I can't let my relatives know I'll be in Japan because I don't have time to spend with them, so mum's the word. Mummmmmm...
If anyone here is headed to the show, let me know!
