These "simple" ones are the ones that get ya.

It seems that one could save building time in some respects, but the scratch building might take some work!
That would be a great experience to watch something like that come together. Are you pondering such an idea Gary?

I will put that on the "Someday" list. Would need to research exactly what is happening there but this is right up my alley and I would love to build it.

The German Kaiser-class dreadnought battleship SMS Prinzregent Luitpold being towed back to Rosyth, keel uppermost.
This is one of many German ships sunk by her crew in Scapa Flow in 1919 after the fleet had surrendered in November 1918.
Although they were scuttled to prevent Allied Forces from using the vessels, some were salvaged and used for scrap metal to manufacture British armaments. Prinzregent Luitpold came to the surface like a lamb in July 1931 and went to Rosyth in May 1932.

I'm betting you'll do a bang-up job on this! 😄
Thanks for that link, too! 👍 Great reading, and in reference to the above pic:Prinzregent Luitpold came to the surface like a lamb in July 1931 and went to Rosyth in May 1932.

Alright. Let’s get going on this. Now you’ve got me wanting to see it. 😂 Will look for one at the big show next month. Would not be at all surprised if one of the 100 or so venders has one at a decent price.

IOM? ICM actually do all four of the König class in both 1:350th and 1:700th but if you want to do a Before-and-After you need the Großer Kurfürst (raised 1938) as the other three are still on the bottom of Scapa Flow. All three were sold on eBay (described as "Pre-owned) in 2019 for £25,500 each - about one tenth of the asking price - to a Middle-Eastern company, who may have been confused by the description "Collection only" and been unaware the wrecks are scheduled monuments which have legal protection and there are hefty fines for even removing souvenirs. The asking price for the SMS Karlsruhe was £60,000 but it sold for £8,500 to a UK bidder who presumably realised all he was getting was the right to call himself the owner of a light cruiser...
Cheers,
M

Cheers, M IOM was a typo. Yes it would be ideal to have the Kurfust as the actual kit but this is a great example of where I feel close enough would be just fine. The Konig class ships were all built at the same time and commissioned within 5 months (less than two weeks between the Konig and the Kurfust) of each other. There would be very little variation between the four ships. Given they all only lasted 4 years there would have been almost zero alterations to differentiate them in any meaningful way. I bet the kits are all near identical with just a different name on them and any one of them could be built as the the others with some references. The history of the remaining wrecks is interesting. Since they were systematically stripped (often using explosives) of the higher grade metals right up into the 70's they are in pretty rough shape even though "still there". The Royal Navy even did some stripping of the Royal Oak in the 50's since it wasn't designated a war grave until the 80's.

Close but not quite. There does seem to have been an effort to individualise all four ships, at least in 1:700th scale (the 1:350th have different sprue layouts and are full-hull only). The common sprues have some alternative parts but at least some of the kits have small sprues of additional components which are unique to each. They do depict König's lack of 8.8cm casemate guns in the forward superstructure, and Markgraf's heavy-duty foremast, for example. Großer Kurfürst is available as a specific boxing so it would be worth looking around for.
Regards,
M

Just nice to have a plan B since they may not be that easy to come by. I have just started the research so may change my mind on what to do once I find what is actually out there. Would like to stick to 1:700 if possible just for display space savings. The turtled hull is easy since it doesn't matter which one I use. The only time the exact right version would matter is with a before and after. I just don't want to pitch out the entire upper works of a kit just to use the bottom of the hull.

garybrantleyWell Gary step one is complete Step two is ordered. I believe the tugs are actually Japanese but they would have been based on a British design and are about the right era so close enough once painted up. Still need to source some figures that won't cost me more than the ship kit did but they can be added at any time. Since the kit I was able to get is the Grosser Kurfürst this will be the picture I will be referencing. Close enough to the original one posted to count I would think.
