I've needed stitches 3 times over my 55 years of model building. Not a bad record actually. The last, and worst, was a few years ago when I was watching the Daytona 500 while building. I was holding a tank hull in my left hand and a #1 handle with #11 blade in my right, trimming down a substantial amount of plastic. "The big crash" occurred and I looked up quickly, the blade slipped, and I felt a burn in my left palm. I had opened up my thumb pad much as you did, but 2.5 inches long and pretty deep. You could clearly see the fat tissue and muscles in the gash. 15 stitches and 5 hours in ER. I was pissed I missed the rest of the race. Getting stitches is sort of a badge of honor to a model builder. You haven't really "been there, done that" until you've had to get stitches.

No three was enough. The top and bottom of the laceration aren't deep enough for stitches.

Oh I would have been pissed if I had missed the Daytona 500 because of this. I did it with the curved blade.

I'm having a discussion between insurance, the pharmacy and my doc about diabetes supplies. they decided not to cover what I've been using for literally decades. Didn't know until I could not get them paid for. (no, I did not read the changes in coverage notice). Okay, fine. Doc, send over a new glucometer, and supplies tot he pharmacy. Still no joy. Insurance now wants prior authorization to cover the new stuff. Meantime, I'm out of my supplies and using the wife's.

That really sucks. Medical insurance is such a huge racket.

I've lost confidence in medicine and providers. I am in end stage kidney failure and require dialysis 3 days a week. I've been trying to "grow" a fistula, 7 surgeries so far yet no joy. The catherter that was placed last June kinda went south, the docs place a new one last Friday and it don't work. Fistula collapsed, catherter marginal....my blood chemsitry might preclude me from having a proceedure with sedation. If I can't get treatment about 3wks and I'm headed to the bench in the sky, OR I get to have stuff done, painful stuff, with only local anestesia. Sorry guys nit the place to drop my problems. Glad you are on the mend Med71.

Yikes. I hate it when that happens. I've had tons of stitches, all from when I was very young. I was a bit rough on myself. Now you get to make up some great story about the other guy.

My Brother just went through a kidney transplant and your story sounds a lot like some of the nightmare he waded through. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts

Glad you are on the mend Med71. Dang Armornut(ii), that super sucks. No problems letting us know where you are at. We are here for you, as well as our other unfortunate brethren with slippy fingers. My worst injury was when I broke my arm in 4th grade. Both bones in my forearm broke, and as I gripped my arm in pain, my hand and wrist "fell". I knew I was in for a serious scolding from my parents (see, Asian upbringing) when the broken ends of the bones showed under my skin, like two fingers. But the most pain I endured was when the doc reset my arm. Such a classic scene, where the doc says "This is gonna hurt."

I was prescribed Colchicine and was told that it wasn't covered by insurance and that it would be $70 per week for the meds. When I called the insurance, they confirmed to me that they didn't cover the Colchicine capsule.......BUT.....they DID cover the Colchicine tablet. Same dosage too. Hope your hand gets better soon Mike and I hope you get your meds soon lyle

So what really sucks is that I have all this time off (can't work with stitches since I lift a lot) and I can't really work on anything.

Dang, Bro. That can happen to any of us at any time, never a fun deal. I laugh when I look at my fingers, they've got scars all over them, because I was a clumsy kid. Somebody take his Xacto away, he's in need of some retraining, HA! Just kiddin, Bro. Mend up quick, Buddy!

Well the stitches came out today. The middle stitch hurt like hell when I took it out. Oh I removed my own stitches cause the doc gave me the removal kit and I've done it before. May have been a little to early but I'm sure it'll heal fine. Got steri strips and a large band aid over it now. The good news is that I van get back to the bench now!!!

Awwww, man, that hurts. Before the knife slipped, did you think "it might slip" As a health care worker (physio) wounds are always interesting to see as I don't see many of them. Get well...

Remember knife falls....let it go....carpet monsters heal much better than humans. Unless the foot intercepts!!! I took one, blade deep, right between the bones of my big toe and the next. I just CAed the wound and taped the toes together for a few days, to keep them from being able to split. To insure that it doesn't happen again... A little piece of sprue, taped to the end keeps it from rolling!
