Mad Max Interceptor Aoshima

About 10 years ago a guy at work gave me 3 kits he had bought for his kids. All three had been started to some extent. Two were write off glue bombs (the engine and interior in my '60 Chevy pickup came from one) the 3rd was this one.

It has sat in a closet since I got it so the box is really dusty!


Some very sloppy brush painting had been done, the door was very sloppily cut out and some minor assembly had been done but it is not beyond hope. Gonna take some work though.

 Not sure what the plan was with that front seat. Needs to come apart and be completly primed and repainted.




Door will have to be open since I am NOT going to try to fix that gap.




Chassis is already self destructing so that will be easy to fix.




Blower has some light damage to the plating but no glue visible.

Well that wasn't to bad. I only tore it up where it can't be seen.




Decals are already on the dash so I will try to work around them.

Well I am pretty sure I now know why it was abandoned. Not sure what I am going to do about this mess much less add detail!

Looking at that I thought it would be a simple glue back together When I checked the fit of the windshield I discovered there is actually about an 1/8th of an inch missing. Think they used a hacksaw lade oy utility knife to open it up. Good thing it will be dirty!

Fortunately given the universe the car comes from it won’t need to be pretty or perfect. Just some already done damage for you. Can’t wait to see where you take it.

Yep that poor car goes downhill fast over the first two movies. The kit is sort of bizarre in some ways. Pretty sure they designed it around one of the street legal clones and never even saw the movie or actual car. It has a full interior including both door panels and the base of a back seat. The insert with the "stowage" on it is very basic and plain with just some blocky geometric shapes almost like it was an afterthought. When you compare the "shelf" to underneath where even though a curbside with pretty much a one piece chassis they went so far as to mold all the drive for the supercharger it is even more confusing. The torn up drivers seat is just a seat that they seem to have just carved out some lines in the mold and stood back and said "There it is torn".

The only other thing I could see is that they were planning a pristine version from the first movie and something changed so they tacked on the stuff from the second but left the base molds pretty much alone.

I’ve only seen this kit from afar but never up close. Interesting to see it and hear about it.

This is one of those kits that triggered me into having a stash. I saw it several times in the early 2000s but is was not a cheap kit, I think $50 or $60 back when a Revell or AMT car kit was around $12 and a Tamiya $20-25. Recently married with a 2 or 3 year old so I would look at it, then put it aside to get another time. Pretty soon you couldn't get it anymore a few other similar occurrences and the stash started to grow. 

I remember there was some aftermarket detail for this kit, some resin, and probably photo etch. As I recall they offered a Mad Max version which was cleaner and didn't have the extra fuel tanks, and the Road Warrior version like you have there.  

I'm kind of jealous, I'm a big fan of the first two movies. When I was in high school I wired the TV to the stereo and would watch the opening scene of both movies with the volume set to rattle the windows.

I wish they had offered the MFP cars from the first movie and the Gyrocopter. Well actually I don't because then I would have more kits on the list to track down.

If the body is in too dire shape, or you just don’t feel like fixing someone else’s butchering, I think I have a spare. I bought the initial release, but also got the second one because they did some interior corrections, like the exposed inner door structure and improved the back shelf and accessories. But the body shell is unchanged I think.

PM me and I can send you the body. I’ll dig into the stash tonight to look for that older kit to verify that I still have it. If it is there, it’s yours.

I have scoured the internet and there is not one reference to them actually making a version from the first movie. There may have been some issue with getting the rights to the first one or something. Wouldn't be the first time something weird like that happened. The kit is so very obviously meant to be the unaltered Interceptor.

I have decided to just hinge the door and repaired the damage to an acceptable level so I truly appreciate the offer but will not need the body.




BUT...
Your reference to an upgraded kit (I didn't catch there was one) has given me what I have spent hours and hours looking for! The only look you ever get to the interior of the car in the movie are brief flash's and there was no way to determine what it actually looked like. The only decent pictures are of complete interior clones or the original car after it had been converted back to street legal. I was just going to wing it and add stuff to the crappy kit parts. I also wanted too scratch the door without the panel on it but again no pictures anyplace. By knowing there was an up graded kit I was able to get what are practically blueprints for both issues so now can scratch up something much closer to accurate!

This is my Holy Grail kit. My goodness these go for stupid money, when you can find them. One day I will have one. Bookmarked. Love the progress.

About 40 or so years ago I took a 71 Mustang and scratch built this car and it was really cool. I know it wasn't a Falcon XB, but I've never seen a kit of just about any Ausi cars. I really wish I had a pic of it and still had it. Best part of it, it wasn't a curbside. Keep the updates coming.

The Road Warrior was one of the great movies that came out while I was in high school. I saw Mad Max on TV afterwards, and thought it was an experimental art film by comparison. The car stunts were incredible in Road Warrior, as there was no CGI back then. The newer Tom Hardy movie looked like the car chase scenes were shot at 15 MPH, probably due to safety regulations. The Humongous was much scarier than Immortal Joe or whatever his name was. AND the Humongous was able to get by without a bungee rock band or circus performers. He was indeed the Ayatollah of rock and rollah, warrior of the wasteland.

Well Mad Max was made on a budget of around $8.00 or something like that so you weren't to far off. The first one shows a bit of breakdown in society with the rampaging biker gangs but stops well short of saying it is post apocalyptic. More like a bad recession and oil shortage than total anarchy.  It was never intended to be the lead off to a whole series just a one off about a cop having a really bad week with a biker gang and getting really pissed about it. When it broke all sorts of records they had the budget to take it further so went back and reworked the back story to make events in the first movie match up with the world they started to build in the second. That is what the commentary at the start of Road Warrior is for. It doesn't just explain the new movie but ties in the first to the new vision.

To me the tension and non reliance on spectacular action shots makes the first movie the best of all of them. Road Warrior was great but had a very different feel to it. Never was a huge fan of Thunderdome and could not care less about Fury Road.

20 year old memories, but I recall part of my problem being indecision between getting the original Mad Max interceptor or the modified Road Warrior version. Both is the obvious answer but at the time that would have probably been my whole years modeling budget.

I have a fairly clear memory of standing in the Fremont Hobbytown USA debating over that option, but that was 20+ years ago and sometimes I can't remember what I had for breakfast. There was resin aftermarket available, so it is possible that in my head I've turned the debate over getting a conversion into a complete kit.


Scalemates is pretty good on kit history, they show several variations on the modified Road Warrior car, but nothing on the original.

Yeah Road Warrior and Mad Max felt like two different kinds of movies, like Alien and Aliens. The poster art for Mad Max suggested a more explosive, fast paced movie, but that was the 1970s. Actually, my favorite misleading movie poster came from the 1980s in the form of “Galaxy of Terror”!

And “Beyond Thunderdome” was kinda stinky. Master-Blaster. Embargo.

Based upon the directions for the upgraded kit. Looks chunky in the pictures but once black will almost disappear in the interior. Chopped off the geometric shapes posing as gear and split them up.

I like that in the revamped kit they included a Dinki Di dog food can and cardboard box, I believe? I tried a can of beef stew from a cheap manufacturer once, and I’d bet money that it tasted the same!

The can and label decal are in the old kit as well. I am guessing the large "box" with the stowage is supposed to be the case. Will be when I am done with it at any rate.
