These Revell Cutlass' really are all that and then a person does what you did to the kit and brings out the best in it. Congratulations on the award on this one as well. Seems like "shiny" is what a lot of judges look for in auto builds which as you've mentioned isn't always correct BUT.....that's what they look for. Job well done on this one with the details and paint.

Nice work, Outerlimits! Bronze is good! I have entered many contest and walked away with nothing. Then I got smarter and started rubbing out my paint and paying more attention to clean assembly. I don't know if you rubbed out your paint but it makes a difference in the finish and gives it an even, smooth, shiny appearance. It only takes about 4 hours ad makes a world of difference! Nice work on your Olds!

Well, that’s a matter of opinion. I think your finish looks great. Nicely built kit.

Gorgeous out of the box build. Judges have the whole "Shiny Paint" Mantra burned into their collective psyche (SP?) GM Products did have very shiny glass smooth paint jobs back then (All painted in lacquer) But yeah, good judges will consider a factory correct finish, novice/lazy ones will not. If it's got enough clear on it to look like Blown glass...That guy don't know how to paint...I tend to count it against a build if I am judging. Dipped in a bucket of clear don't cut it with me... Your build looks great! the color choice is too cool and a rare one at that. nicely done...Remember Judging is "Subjective" And first time out and you placed? That's an accomplishment in and of its self! Bask in the glow brother!!!

I built this specifically for the area model show back in Jan. I kept it a box build. I did research on the car and found a rare build of it so I replicated it. I took a Bronze finish with this in my first show. The judges only comments were, "it isn't shiny enough." After seeing some of the other builds and what looked like they were all under 6" of clear plastic resin, I love my build. It looks more like a realistic car to me. That '6'" of plastic resin' really strikes a chord with me. I build mostly race cars and have yet to see a real car with that much clear coat on it. I tend to not use any clear on my builds and I like the way they look. But I know my builds have lost out to others with that dipped in plastic look.

Those cars built back in the day only had single stage paint and it was only shiny to a point. So 2K finishes are not accurate for the time. I personally prefer the look of 2k on my cars, but I know it is far more shiny than what the car was born with. The judges are clearly biased towards 2k builds rather than the quality of the work or paint. Congrats on the bronze, it deserved better. IMO

I was thinking about our conversations on this when he posted what the judges said about his build. Shame they’re like that a lot of shows.
