Hasegawa 1/48 Draken

I actually started on this a few years ago when I was able to do a fair amount of assembly work at work. I only paint at home so it sat waiting for me to have time. Not a shelf of doom kit as there is nothing bad about this kit at all. Just needed time. Having been a Saab automobile tech for 30 plus years I thought it appropriate to build one of their planes. I really like Hasegawa kits and wish they were still active. Pretty easy to build, pretty accurate, and pretty affordable. What's not to like. Painted with MRP, Mr. Color, and Tamiya acrylic and lacquer. All my favorite paints.

Mmmmmmm...Draken! One of my favorite jet designs. The camo colors looks spot on. Who's ejection seat (that surely isn't the kit part!)?

Thanks, guys! Yes, it's a Quickboost seat. Really the only thing the cockpit needs as the rest is pretty nice and you can't see much of it anyway.

Narrowly avoided the trash can on this one. I don't usually gloss coat for decal application but given the large numbers on top of the wings with large areas of decal film I thought it couldn't hurt. I decided to use Aqua Gloss which I had on the shelf but don't think I have ever used it before. Long story short, I got too heavy a coat when spraying after the decals were on, tried to just run it under water while it was still wet and that was a mistake. Ended up with some off and some still on which resulted in about five hours of sanding and repainting over and over while avoiding the decals. Pretty much repainted all of the big 6, small sections at a time. I do love Post-it notes for masking.

Looking great!  Love the Draken.  It was one of the first planes to supercruise, something quite uncommon in the 1950s.  Back in the day, it was mostly a question of brute force over aerodynamics.  Until recently, I did not know it was also the first plane capable of doing the "cobra" maneuver.  (The F-100's infamous "death dance" down the runway doesn't count!)

Now if only Hasegawa would do a Viggen...

Wow this is awesome. Great save too. I've always thought the Draken was a cool looking beast. Never realized how small it was til I saw a pic with it next to something else.

Thanks, guys!! Finally managed to finish this one up this morning. Really nice kit. All problems were of my own making. It is a fairly small plane although still bigger than an A-4, which is about the same size as a Tunnan which I also have in the works. Only AM is the Quickboost seat and a Master pitot which is super fragile but looks great. Mr. Color paint on top, Tamiya bottom. Happy with the result.
