Dear Modeler's Social Club Members, As a fellow enthusiast and vendor in our vibrant community, I'm eager to dive deeper into the diverse interests and passions that drive our collective love for scale modeling. Each of us brings a unique perspective and expertise to the table, and I believe that by sharing our preferences and experiences, we can enrich our hobby even further. In this thread, I invite you all to share your modeling niche—whether it's the scale you prefer, the type of models you specialize in, or the specific themes that ignite your creativity. Whether you're into military vehicles, aircraft, ships, figures, or dioramas, your input is invaluable. Here are a few prompts to get the conversation started: Scale Preferences: Do you have a favorite scale that you consistently work with? Are you drawn to the intricacies of smaller scales like 1/72 or 1/48, or do you prefer the larger canvas of 1/35 or even larger scales 1/16 ; 1/25? Model Types: What types of models do you enjoy building the most? Are you a tank aficionado, an aviation enthusiast, a ship modeler, or perhaps someone who loves bringing historical figures to life through modeling? Themes and Eras: Are there specific themes or historical periods that you find particularly fascinating? Whether it's World War II, modern warfare, sci-fi, or fantasy, I'm eager to hear what captures your imagination. Special Techniques: Do you have any special techniques or approaches that you've developed in your modeling journey? Whether it's weathering, scratch-building, or advanced painting techniques, feel free to share your expertise with the community. Future Projects: Lastly, what exciting projects do you have lined up for the future? Whether it's a kit you've been eyeing for a while or a custom project that you're planning to tackle, we'd love to hear about your upcoming endeavors. Warm regards, Dan www.scalecollectibles.com

This ties into the next query. model type: Automotive, particularly open wheel race cars are my go to subject which explains the scales I typically work in. But I build a bit of everything. Eras: not specifically for race cars as I’ve have (either built or in stash) Indycar and grand Prix cars from 1911 until nearly the present day. No special techniques for me. I’m lucky if I just get the model built. 🤦🏻♂️🤣 Future projects?: Too many. However we do have an impending open wheel racing group build coming up. I have a F1 and Indycar lined up for that and maybe a dirt racer too. Who knows.

My niche is
1/48 military aircraft of all kinds from WWII to modern
1/35 armor of all kinds,I am building a 1/16 Tiger as a one-off,and I previously built some 1/48 armor.
Also 1/350 ships
I'm fanatical about mixing scales,like 1/72,1/48,1/32 a/c
Or 1/700 and 1/350 ships, can't do it that's why I stick to one scsle of each type
I don't do separate figures, but do them to add to armor.

Scale - mostly 1/48 but will go to 1/72 for the bigger birds and 1/144 1/200 for airliners. 1/12 for bikes, 1/20, 1/24 1/25 for autos Type: 70% aircraft 30% autos Eras: WWII and forward for most everything. Bikes are modern. Techniques... good canopy masking and less fingerprints Future - some 180+ models to build. I have a few fun special projects planned that I'll share when I get going. And looking forward to the open wheel GB with Kyle

I like aircraft, smaller the aircraft the bigger the scale needs to be, not much for size comparisons in that regard. Armor is my go to, 1/35, however I've developed a taste for the 1/16th offerings that are out and coming. SPGs SPAAGS and modern Russian coastal/ mid range artillery wheeled rigs. 1/12 cars mostly F1s. Sci-Fi like Star Wars and Star Trek. No Figs or busts although I will do my best on the 1/16 and 1/35 crews I have floating around. Future projects? Everything LOL. Actually I have a 1/25th 4 axle heavy wrecker, and a 1/25th Ertl PayHauker dumptruck that eventualky are going to get the Mad Max treatment....just for fun.

In the past it was mostly armour and figures in any scale. Now it's all over the shop, basically whatever takes my fancy. Got way more than I can ever build, but keep buying. In the future I plan a 35th scale road to Dunkirk dio with possibly 7 vehicles and troops. .

I will build any genre in any scale. Mostly prefer old school kits done OOB with paint to make them look more modern. Do enjoy modeling a nice damaged aircraft but none of my methods on them are new or unknown. I do have a method of using tinted Future for highlighting and weathering that I have never seen anybody else use before but it probably isn't all that rare really. My projects usually blow in on the wind and can get put aside for a decade or so between sessions but I do have a long term plan to build every kit of a car (well the cooler cars) that I used to own in real life which currently is on #4 of about 20

Your modeling niche: Automobiles
Scale Preferences: 1/16 - 1/25 No real reason for it, maybe space? Id love to build all 1/12 but cost, space and choice prohibit that.
Model Types: Automobile Race Cars, performance cars, and the occasional american classic
Themes and Eras: Theme would be mostly JDM and the occasional USDM. My favorite Era is the 1990's for JDM and 50's - 70's USDM
Special Techniques: Really jsut getting started, At least seriously. So no special techniques yet.
Future Projects: 1/16 VW 23 window lowered, with working headlights and tailights.
Ps... That 1/25 Dodge D-500 Cab Complete Kit you have on your website is a real beaut!

My modeling niche: 90% aircraft 10% auto
Scale: split 50-50 between 72 and 48 with a couple of 1/144-1/200 snuck in. Autos 1/24-1/25
Type: aircraft 1930- present. Auto. 1950-present
No special techniques. Been building for almost 50 years with short breaks for girls and cars and kids.
Future: I have a pretty large stash and I want to build them all

Pretty much like doggie doo…all over the place in scale and subjects.
Mostly 1/48 aircraft with some 1/32 and 1/72. Some smaller scale if the subject is big enough.
I’ve gotten more into 1/25 trucks lately. And some ships
No special techniques, just old tired eyes and stiff hands.
Future? 1/35 CH-54, after a couple of trucks.

I've been on a 1/6 scale figure kick, and am also in the middle of 3D printing a 3/4 studio scale Battlestar Galactica. I think I'll need to build an addition to house to hold all this stuff lol. BSC

I enjoy painting figures, and doing a vignette or diorama every so often. I also enjoy scratchbuilding planes and sci fi subjects. A 1/35 th scale armour subject is thrown in, too. 🤓

I also had to quote this. Okay, here we go!
Scale preferences:
My preferred scale is 1/72 scale exclusively for my aircraft, armor, civilian vehicles, motor boats, real space and Sci-Fi models. I have built a couple 1/48 scale aircraft that I kept for myself, and one 1/35th scale M48 Patton tank for a club group build because that version of the Patton is one of my favorite tanks, but overall, I strictly stick with 1/72 scale. My Navy ships I tend to stick with 1/700 scale for my cruisers and smaller ships; my big ships like supercarriers and battleships I like prefer in 1/600 or even 1/500 scale if I can get them in that scale.
Model Types:
I'm all over the place with my types. I'm most prolific building Armor, Aircraft and Boats and Ships. That is mostly because of the proliferation of model kits of those types. I will build just about anything that catches my interest in a big way.
Themes and Eras:
Again, I am not restrictive here. My aircraft, armor and ships range from WWI to the present, with some sailing ships and a paddlewheeler from earlier eras as well. I also do Sci-fi which is in the near to far future so that increases my "range" of Eras.
Special Techniques:
I am primarily and Out of Box builder; whatever is in the box is what I use to build the models. If by some chance there is extra aftermarket stuff included; I'll consider using it, but I don't go out and buy anything after market unless it's absolutely necessary to finish something. I have been getting a bit better with my weathering technique using Tamiya weathering powders, but overall, I don't have any real special techniques.
Future Projects:
Right now I just started a 'future' project, modifying my 1/72 scale German P.1000 Ratte into a 'carrying case' for my small scale vehicles that I bring to shows and contests. Other future projects I am planning are:
-> a 1/72 scale replica of the M*A*S*H 4077 compound, complete with as much of the interior of the Swamp as I can replicate.
-> a 1/72 scale abridged* replica of a Soviet Sa-2 SAM site.
-> a 1/72 scale Millennium Falcon from the kit that I have.
-> and finally; I found a whole mess of the old Matchbox display bases that went with all their 1/76 scale armor, as well as other small bases from some kits. I want to try building a display/photo base with all of them in some sort of believable layout. I'd have to show pics of those so you know what I'm thinking about.
*abridged: smaller than it would normally be since these were spread way out. I'll be making it modular too.
And that's my story in a nutshell.

Scale Preferences: I'm getting older and I prefer 1/35 and larger scales. I think they invented all this great 1/16 stuff for people like me. Model Types: My first love is armor, I've been fascinated by tanks since I was a boy. Lately, I have gotten into Ma. K and really enjoy the uniqueness of the kits. I also find myself drawn to kits that are more out of the mainstream, such as trucks, artillery, and trains. I've always wanted to build a 1/35 armored train. Themes and Eras: Armor and military vehicles from any era and science fiction Special Techniques: Not really, I'm not an experienced enough modeler to have my own special techniques; I consider it a good evening at the bench when I don't glue my fingers together or screw up a kit. Future Projects: I have several kits already under construction that I need to spend some time on, the 1/35 Tamiya 88mm not sure why I'm not working on this one, Academy 1/35 M18 Hellcat - My favorite tank just need to work on it, Panther G in 1/25 - This one pissed me off and I banished it for a while, Hobby Boss 1/35 Soviet Armor Tractor - Waiting on tracks to arrive. High on my list are the Das Werk 1/35 Vomag, Ma. K Fledermaus, Ma. K Vega/Altair, Takom M48A3, and the Hobby Boss 1/35 M1070 Gun Truck (planning to do something post-apocalypse with it) Great Idea for a thread; I'm enjoying reading all the responses; how would you answer these questions, dmodels???

I started out with airplanes, mostly 1/72 for budgetary reasons. I got into 1/35 armor and expanded into 1/48 aircraft in middle school as my pocket money increased. I also built Star Wars kits, as I grew up in the 1977-1983 time frame when the original trilogy played in the theaters. I got into Luftwaffe 1946 in a big way when I started working in 1988. And then the Gundam kits came with the flood of "real robot" anime in the late 1980s and 1990s. I like unusual model subjects, and it seems the manufacturers of almost every genre are doing them, which pleases me to no end. As I get older, I find myself less willing to fight kits of lower quality. I am also getting lazy. I once considered replacing all grab handles on my armor kits to be mandatory, but no longer care about such things. Experimental and prototype aircraft models used to be the exclusive domain of limited run manufacturers, but fortunately for me, we are getting some pretty nice "X-planes" these days. The Gundam kits are the only ones where I still don't mind putting in extra work. But even they have improved dramatically over the years, so much so that drastic changes to their proportions are no longer necessary. I have noticed that older kit builds have increased in popularity these days, and I can see why. The nostalgia and "fun" of modeling can be had all over again - or we can use our modern tools and methods to hammer the little bugger into submission!

Scale Preferences: 1:48 for A/C and 1:35 for armor
Themes and Eras: Primarily WW2, a little WW1 and an occasional oddity.
Special Techniques: I build dioramas and will attempt to scratch build or otherwise fabricate the bases when I can.
Future Projects: I have a shed filled with kits purchased from 1980's to 2023, yet I still find excuses to buy new stuff.
Cheers, C.

My on this… Scale preferences: armor kits 1/35, but I also occasionally dabble in 1/48 & 1/32; aircraft kits 1/48, with an occasional 1/32 or 1/35; ships I try to stay in 1/350, but if a subject appeals to me in one of the various “box scales”, I’ll work on it; for Real Space & Sci Fi I’ll build in any scale of the kits available. Model Types: I primarily build military models, armor, aircraft, figures and ships, but I also dabble in Sci Fi and Real Space subjects. Themes and Eras: I prefer wartime subjects for my military models- WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Middle East, the various small wars & “incidents”… I also really like to do the Cold War subjects Special Techniques: Nothing I can claim Future Projects: I have plenty planned, although my build completion rate tends to put a damper on getting those planned projects off the ground. Between online GBs, and projects with the clubs that I’m part of, they tend to stack up quickly… never enough time in the day to do all we wish to do… one planned project that keeps getting pushed to the back burner is a pair of T-80s from opposing sides in the current Ukraine War.

Scale Preferences: I've always built in the 1/48 cause my eyesight can't handle smaller stuff although 1/72 for bigger aircraft like the P-3 I'm working on. Model Types: I'd say 90% aircraft, 9% Sci-Fi and 1% armor
Themes and Eras: I prefer the modern jets/aircraft. I also love doing any era US Navy aircraft. Special Techniques: Influencing people to get HobbyZone organizers (no I don't work for them) and making their own model logos. Oh and putting Xacto knives in my hand, literally. Future Projects:Too many to list. Right now I just want to finish the multitude of WIP going.

Scale preference- I lean towards 1/24, followed closely by 1/25, but also enjoy 1/20. That being said I’ll build about any scale from 1/25 on up. But no small scale stuff for me.
My preference is automotive subjects. Muscle cars are my favorite, but if it’s got four wheels I’m probably into it. And any era works for me. Love ‘em all!
My specialty is not having a specialty! 😁 But I’m constantly experimenting, so maybe experimentation is my specialty? I don’t remember the last build I did that I didn’t try something new on a project.
Future plans? Man, just keep plugging away. Actually, I’m looking at 3D printing now. Also, I’d like to expand into aircraft building as well. Always been fascinated by planes and have a good stash of them waiting.

Hi Dan Sorry I missed this last week. I started off with 1/72 quick build wargaming kits - not everyone's cup of tea but they were perfect for my then 6 year old son. I still have a load in the stash and have recently have acquired some more, as I still have a real soft spot for them. This is mainly AFVs of all sorts but also AT guns, artillery and figures. In this case these are exclusively German and British (or at least US vehicles that saw service with us Brits e.g. Shermans). Then a few years ago, I started a collection of 1/72 kits and reference material in some way shape or form connected to the British WW2 bomber offensive, with the title 'The Hunters and the Hunted'. It obviously contains a number of the 'hunted' British bombers, as well as a surprisingly large number of German nachtjäger 'hunters'. It also includes some of the British 'hunters' in the form of nightfighters and other 'intruders' that went hunting for the nachtjägd....and that of course were also hunted by those same German planes. In addition to the wingy things, there will be some 'ground dwelling' kits e.g. AA guns, radar and searchlights. You can find more info here: modelerssocialclub.proboards.com/thread/14254/hunters-hunted-kits-reference-materialThen last year I put together a sizeable stash of 1/48 Wingy things, mostly Eduard. These are mostly British, US and Germany, although there are some Japanese and Soviet planes too, plus a random Czech ones I also have a handful of 1/35 armour kits and a random selection of other kits at a range of scales as most people do. In terms if genre, almost exclusively WWII or pre-war designs that saw service in the war. There are a few cold/post-war kits and one WWI kit. I tend to build OOB with some AM parts as I see fit but I am not one of those people that buys lots of AM parts to correct errors. I don't do much scratch building other than to sometimes improve some of the quick build kits. In terms of plans, whilst I intend to build some new kits this year, I am going to try to finish off some of the many shelf queens I have. Hope you find that useful. Andrew

I'm like Andrew, I totally missed this one BUT.....I found it so here we go: Scale Preferences: When it comes to aircraft, I've always stayed with 1/48 but I've recently acquired a couple of 1/72 scale aircraft thanks to seeing Joe Rix and fermis and a couple of others here build in that scale and pull it off well. When it comes to autos, it's always in the 1/24---1/25 scale ranges. All of these scales are just comfortable for me to work with. Model Types/ Genres: I built aircraft for YEARS until getting the auto bug somewhere around 2014 and have been building autos ever since with an occasional aircraft mixed in here and there. I've been getting the bug to switch back to aircraft full time as of late though. Themes and Eras: For aircraft, it's always a WWII subject for me and primarily Axis aircraft at that. I'll throw an American/ Allied plane in there every once in a while but I just really have a liking for a good looking aircraft and while a good ol' P-51 or F4U is a good looking bird....there just aint nuthin' like the sinister look of a Fw190D series or Me262. Autos are all over the map with subjects ranging from the 1940's all the way up to modern day. If it looks fast....I'll build it. Special Techniques: Still learning on aircraft after watching all of the talent from builders here and abroad. Try to learn something new every day. Autos......I have a system for paint finishes that I've found through the years. Try to stay with the same paint manufacturer to get consistent results and for the gloss coat I consistently use Testors Wet Look decanted from the can and shot through a Badger 350 airbrush which gives perfect results every time. After that it's wet sanding walking up from the 3000, 4000, 6000, 8000 and then 12000 grit ranges and then off to the polishing stages. Future Projects: Yeesh! I'll be eyeballin' my next build while in my current one and decide.....and then at the last second I've been known to totally change my mind and build something in my stash that I hadn't even thought of in a while. To answer this one more correctly.....whatever hits my mind at the time of an ongoing build completion. lol This was indeed a great idea for a thread dmodels. I'm like Brian in being curious what your interests and techniqes are. Great to have you here bud.

Scale Preferences:
Never a conscious decision as I made 1/72 aircraft and armour as a kid, but these days it's all 1/35 scale, mainly due to subject matter.
Model Types:
On returning to the hobby in the mid 2000's it was armour. WWII German armour. I then found myself buying more and more softskins. Again all German vehicles.
Themes and Eras:
The reason I am drawn to the vehcles above is my fascination with the Normandy campaign in 1944. Pretty much any vehicle used by the axis forces in northern France after D-Day has my interest. Why Normandy and why axis vehicles? The reason is two-fold. My grandad served as a mechanical engineer and recalled many a tale regarding the destruction he witnessed as Allied forces headed inland. He also admired the way the Germans had converted captured vehicles. I have read many books on the campaign but I just fell in love with the wonderful Panzerwrecks publications. I think those images reinforced that relief my Grandad conveyed. Seing those once mighty hulks and splintered skeletons so clearly as he had done made me want to recreate them in miniature. Many of my creations depict abandoned or derelict German vehicles and it's only recently that some of them have survived intact.
Special Techniques:
Realism in scale. Simple as.
Future Projects:
Way too many!

Hi there! My names Jim and I'm like a few of the other guys who just saw this post. I started building models in 1946 (6 years old) and never stopped. I build anything that strikes my fancy and my wallet says OK at the time. Scale preference:- Used to be any scale if it was a model I wanted. As I got older, 1/72, 1/48, 1/32 and larger. As I got OLDER, I stopped the 1/72 or smaller. Model Types:- Planes 1/48 WWI & WWII, Cars 1/24, 1/25, 1/16, 1/8, Wooden Sailing Ships any scale, Armour 1/35, Other any scale. Themes and eras:- Planes WWI & WWII, Cars '50s & '60s, Sailing Ships any type, Armour any theme if I like it, Others any scale if I like it. Special techniques:- I don't think I have any special ones. Just use all that I've learned over my 77 years of building and if asked for help I pass it on. No problem. Have helped a few get started in model building and hope to help more. Future projects:- Taking a 1/8 '32 Ford kit and putting a 1/8 Testarosa V-8 engine in the rear for rear wheel drive. WIP the last 10 years on and off. Working on an Artesania Lataina Bluenose II and a few other side projects. Stay safe. Jim
