Hmm, I'll have to think a bit. Is this a $10 million, $100 million, $1 billion lottery? Last couple big Mega Lotto or whatever was 1 billion in winnings so lets go 1 billion! Ok then. Porsche 550 spyder Porsche 904 1959 Jaguar Mk1 1959 MGA twin cam roadster 1964 Porsche 356C Aston Martin DB-5 1965 Buick Riviera 1969 Jaguar E type roadster 1970 Porsche 914-6 1972 Citroen DS21 1969 Corvette 427 coupe 1980's Rover SD1 1980 VW Scirocco S. Daily driver 2 1981 Triumph TR-8 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT 1993 MG RV8 1999 MGF Give my 79 MGB to Snake River classics and $100K and have them do their thing. 2024 Bentley Continental GT. Daily driver 1 2024 Corvette E-Ray Buy the T-37 from the boneyard that I soloed in. BD-5 Jet with both long and short wings Cessna 177 Cardnial A buiss-jet, probably a Citation Mustang. Got to get places. Buy a seat on the next Space-X Dragon flight

Before the war, maybe the Russians would have sold me a Mig 29 But now they need all the aircraft they have!!! I'm with you Tony... if I won a massive amount of money, it would be flight training, a pilots license, and some sort of classic warbird aircraft... perhaps a Stearman biplane or something meaner... I wouldn't mind having another fancy car or a truck, but my head is in the clouds...

I was interested in flying for years - went through a lot to consider being a pilot in the army until they told me if I washed out of flight school I would be in infantry (no disrespect). I took a few helo lessons at Palomar back in the day. What changed everything was when I had a friend of mines son fly me up to pick up my Charger from San Diego to Oxanrd just north of Ventura after they installed their supercharger on my car. He let me take the stick on ascent and the little Cessna 152 seemed like it was hanging on the prop climbing out. But the amount of busy work flying through LA airspace just took the joy out of flying - though I will say the landing was really fun. Flew past the runway and turned and descended at the same time - pucker! Ever since then I've lost my interest in flying.

Why buy a Tesla?
They are just an electric appliance. No real personality to them.

The electric fans assign as much personality to their cars as anybody else. Personally not a fan but there are loads of them out there.

tcoat,
We can respectfully agree to disagree.
By personality I mean quirks, oddities, interesting aspects of the driving experience.
Many cars have these, My Chevy Bolt does not. It is a appliance/car. It just works as transportation, and as such it is great- as transportation.
My wife's Volvo has a unique driving style, its very subtle but it is there. As did her Cadillac's and Chevy's before. All were good, just slightly different.
I tend to like older cars, as you can see from my list. These all have little nuances in the way they drive. They do some things very well, others not so much, many just slightly different from the way other cars do them. This all adds up to a driving experience unique to that brand/make/model.
Having driven Scirocco's and Celica's in the '70s and '80s, both were very good cars but had VERY different personalities/feels.

Personally not a fan but there are loads of them out there. Gotta disagree here as well. I've owned multiple cars of the same make/model and have to admit they all had their own differences. Like Mach7 says, maybe its in the engineering, or the condition of each car but I would consider that "personality."

I am not saying cars don't have personality but simply that their power source being electricity does not eliminate that. It is just a different type than what we like but not nonexistent. Their personality is bland to us but so are such things as a Camry or most SUVs even though they are ICE. There are some people that love the personality of electrics, and Priusis, and Minivans and god help them Silverados. My car reeks of personality!

Funny story... A couple of years ago I came into some money. I almost bought that car right there. Right hand drive, 2jz swapped(first model year didn't have the 2jz apparently?) Low miles. Adulthood kicked in and I bought an FJ Cruiser instead. Saved a ton of money.

Big things have a way of owning you and keeping you busy with things you may not wish to be doing. Learning to fly is one thing, and I recommend everyone do it, the more the ratings the better. Rent the airplane! Owning an airplane is another whole other thing. A warbird may be a good investment but it's a hell of a risk if you fly it. And remember, if you have a bunch of money and don't manage to keep on the low about it you are a big target for the legal fraternity. The first thing you should buy is four or five nested shell corporations and a really mean attorney of your own.
I would have to say that I have been lucky enough to fly a lot of airplanes and do a lot of other interesting things that I don't need to do again so buying the next model is a good enough thrill for me at this point. It would be fun to have a TR-3, though. Yellow.

On that note I'd add a Cessna 190/195 to the list.
I estimate that my list will cost $14.5 million. Add in a suitable garage/hanger for the whole deal, probably another $600K for an old mill and to equip it with lifts, climate/humidity control security. 3 mechanics to keep them running would probably add $360K a year, add in $100K a year for consumables/parts. Figure at least another $200K a year for property/excise taxes and another $200K for insurance.
It goes without saying that any large lottery winning would require legal and financial representation. Thats not cheap, probably at least $100K a year.
A $1 Billion lottery winning should clear $350-400 mil after the lump sum payout and taxes. Take $50 million to pay off everything, buy a sensible 2nd home, and buy my toys.
So conservatively $300 mil to generate income. I should be comfortable for the rest of my (and my wife's) life. It looks like $700-800K a year in sunk costs and $5-7 million in income taxes, assuming a 5% rate of return. I think I can hold out longer than I can live and still leave something for the kids.
The Citation would be the biggest expense, maybe go for am Encore or a Cirrus jet to save some bucks.

I prefer quirky cars over high performance, so I'd have a dozen "daily drivers" Saab 96, Volvo 164, Peugeot 504, Ford Model A etc, none of which require winning the lottery to own. I'd take an Alvis 3 liter drop head coupe for driving on nice days when I had no where special to be. I could go nuts with ideas, but then I'd need some place to put them all, and I already have trouble with the model stash...

Id buy all the random cars I have loved through the years... and Id need a ware house. But I would drive them all haha. Not a collector, definitely a driver!

It's fun to talk about though!!! In reality...I'd maybe partner with another or even otherS on a twin. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the 310! Anything beyond that seems like a bit more of a workload, flying and otherwise! I'd still be happy to rent a 172 or DA-40, and save the headaches of ownership. It's all pipe dreams anyway!!!

Great idea for a thread!! And no doubt my wife would murder me immediately. She’d have to after I went out the first day on Facebook marketplace and bought every undesirable, low value “collectible” I could find. 😂 Porsche 944, Jaguar XJS, MGB, some ratted out VW, a 4 door Chevelle, a rusty square body suburban. I’d be a mess. 🤣. I love so many cars and so many cars that are just not great. I don’t think I’d splurge on anything super expensive. Maybe something like a Lancia Delta Evo that I’d have to import or find already imported. That could cost a bit of a pretty penny. But mostly just old junk that no one likes much. Sort of like my current ‘95 Impala SS. The car has never lost a ton of value but has never gained much either. I could probably sell it today for about what I paid for it in 2006.

Reading this actually changes my answer a bit. If I had that much money I could have a state of the art shop and no need to work for a living so plenty of time. The cars I would want would be the same but the condition I got them in would be very different. 1/1 scale modeling!

I would go nostalgic and buy up the cars I owned in the past. Or at least as close I could get and all would be in better shape than when I owned them! My actual car at my wedding came up in my Google search! And with that much money I would have a new (well old) fishing boat. Fishing with depth charges?🤣

Oh, I forgot all about the 1977 Lancia Stratos. I'd love to experience the sheer terror of off-road rally driving in the first bespoke rally car. It was such a cool looking car with that almost vee-shaped windscreen and wedge body. But I'd settle for a modern replica car with air conditioning. The big snorkel cut into the roof of the original car is not to my liking. And I'd use it for boulevard cruising. For cars from my past, I'd love to have a brand-new 1983 Honda Accord LX hatchback in blue. I loved everything about that car, except for the carbureted 1.8 L engine that put out a whopping 75 HP. I learned to accelerate before hitting hills. For cars that could have been in my past, a 2010 Toyota Celica. I seriously considered buying one the year it was discontinued.

Big things have a way of owning you and keeping you busy with things you may not wish to be doing. This is where my mind went when I started thinking about what I'd want. In addition to our daily drivers 2014 Subaru Forester and 2008 Toyota Tundra I still own the 1985 Volvo 240 that was my daily driver until 2018. Then I have a 1969 Toyota Land Cruiser, and a 1958 Dodge fire engine for fun. Additionally my Dad has a 1952 GMC truck that is mine for the taking. As I started making a list, as much fun as it would be to have a bunch of interesting vehicles, I'm already underwater on time for project vehicles. It actually started to make me tired when I started thinking about the logistics that would be involved.

That's a interesating question - tbh, as I'm not really into cars I can only think of one vehicle I'd like to own if I had pots of money.
When I was younger I was keen to get a PPL, but less so these days, but you never know if I had the cash. A proper Cessna 310 with the old style Tuna tanks would be high on the list.
