I had a couple few ejector pin marks to deal with on all the hatch doors, so took care of them with some Mr. Surfacer and a sharp scalpel. After that I primed and painted them. I installed the one on the left side or the turret, because it will remain closed. The others will be added on later. I also built the cupola, primed the inside, painted it, and cleaned it up. Then I installed it. Gee wiz. This thing could conceivably get primed and painted this week. Sheesh! Maybe I’ll build all the wheels and sprockets and tracks and stuff first. That’s probably the best idea. Still, it’s only Monday. But I don’t want to rush things. I ended up needing to do some small, precise fills here and there around the edges. I believe this is due to: 1. All the hard manipulation of turret parts, handling them, sanding them, and so on, to get rid of all the ejector pin marks. Perhaps that slightly bent/reshaped the parts just a fraction of a fraction of a mm. 2. I was overly cautious and ginger when gluing it together. All parts were painted separate and then joined and I was concerned my Extra Thin might wick down in there and ruin some of the paint, even though I use the quick setting type. Oh well. That’s okay. I’m glad I took the time to do it.

Making some great progress on this one!! These Tamiya Panzers are a lot of fun to build and they build up fast. I’m not certain about this, but I believe this IV is fairly newer than a lot of their other German stuff. It’s got much more detail than their III type (still a really good kit in its own right). The details aren’t as fine as the Ryefield offering, but that’s alright. It’s plenty detailed enough for me and it’s a joy to build.

I found another reference photo, taken after the tank was captured. Looks like I’ve got a jerry can rack that I’ll need to build, and I’ll have to get creative with the numbering there on the stowage bin. Looks like there’s a faded “411” on it, with the “215” painted over. That’ll be cool, if I can pull it off.

Thank you Kyle. I’m thinking that the texture might be too large for scale, but in this case I don’t think that will be a problem. Something something “stage makeup.” I did take the time to smooth it down with some sanding sticks, and then hit it with a fine microfiber pad. I think it’ll look cool as long as I don’t mess up the paint work LOL

Nice work! Applying Mr Surfacer to the mufflers to add the texture is always fun!

Okay, a little more progress, now both runs of tracks are done. They sag very qrkk, like in the reference photo a few comments above. They mostly come in chunks but you do have to use individual ones around the drive sprockets and rearward big wheels. That can get a shade fussy. They’re glued together but none of the wheels are glued on, so removing the track runs, and wheels for painting won’t be an issue. Or shouldn’t be. Also, I made a little holder out of styrene sheet to match what’s in the adore-mentioned reference photo. It even hangs down at a slight diagonal the way the one in the photo did. Siiigh. I kinda wish I hadn’t found that photo, because no I’m left pondering how I’m going to tackle the partly-visible old turret number oversprayed with the new one. Ah well. I’ll figure that out when I get there. Anyway, we’re just about ready for priming and painting I reckon. I’ll build the other figured and get the little bits and bobs ready to go and we’ll be off to it!

Had to pop one end of the extra jerrycan holder off so I could shorten it. I hadn’t taken into account the placement of the jack, and I got to thinking “Why would it extend that far if the jack would interfere with getting a fourth jerrycan in there?” So I shortened it, without making sure I’d still be able to fit at least three jerrycans in there. Fortunately that wasn’t a problem, my extra jerrycans which I copped from a previous failed build, fit fine. This looks better. Why have empty space in a holder? Looks nicer when it fits just three cans, and with the jack there (dry fit for now), it adds some nice busyness to this side of the tank. No reason to fill the holes because the Jerrycans cover them.

You’re a building machine Kenny! Nice natural look to the sag on the tracks! I so wish I could take credit for that but that’s 100% Tamiya engineering. They support a jig and pre-sagged track sections and everything!! but THANK YOU!!!

And here I am finally to find out that I've been missing quite the show going on in here. You did a great job replicating the proper sags in the tracks and with the added details bud. I'll be tuning back into this one Kenny as you're spankin' the heck out of this build.

Not that you need much help, but I enjoy detailing exhausts,I usually start with a metal, iron or steel base, then a mixture of rust and black washes and pigments until it looks right to your eye. Here are some looks I've achieved.

Tojo, that’s very helpful, and thank you! You’re definitely dialed-in to where I want to be with this. The biggest thing that bugs me is whether my texture is “scale” or not. Part of me doesn’t care. The other part of me worries that it’ll stick out too much. I have another one of these exhausts floating around here someplace, and I think I’m gonna build it, not texture that one, and then paint both using the method you outlined above, and see which I like better.

I came across this video when building my M41 Bulldog and needed to do the characteristically rusted muffler covers on those vehicles. It is a simple and effective method.
My attempt was probably a bit of overkill, but you can see the effect:
