I came across this video when building my M41 Bulldog and needed to do the characteristically rusted muffler covers on those vehicles. It is a simple and effective method.
My attempt was probably a bit of overkill, but you can see the effect:
Gary- I wish the board had a “wow” react, that looks great and I don’t think it’s overkill at all. I think it’s just right, as subsequent paintwork, filters, and so forth tie such things in nicely. That’s one thing I learned with my foray into minis/figures- sometimes we really have to do it up to ensure the detail/effects we’re creating call pull through harmoniously with the rest of the composition later on down the line. I’ll give that video a look later on today, thank you for sharing it and posting an example of your work, it’s great!

Thank you, Kenny! 🙏🏻 You are so right; sometimes a bit too much turn out better after all the other weathering techniques come into play. Here you can see that effect is toned down somewhat at the end of the build. 😊

Gary, that’s exactly what I was talking about yes, and beautifully illustrated.
A few things of note- your work on that exhaust was in no way garish or distasteful or grandiose. Rather, it was just pronounced enough for the effect to magically appear visible and in scale after all the other effects were added. That’s a nifty trick you pulled, and it’s NOT easy. Sometimes you have to just barely cross that line into what one might perceive as “over done” when looking at just that one component individually. In order for it to look “Just Right” once that component is taken with the whole.
Also, buddy I gotta tell ya, that is just a fantastic tank. Forget a home run, that right there is a Grand Slam.

Oh, man, thank you for those super nice comments, Kenny! 🙏🏻 That really means a lot to me. That was my third tank model, and I was happy with how it turned out. Thanks so much! 😃
