Time for my custom Tamiya Primer mix of 1:1 White & Black. As you can see the primer looks almost White. In real life it's a little Grayer; All the parts that are Gloss White were air brushed with Gravity Titanium White, given a few days to cure, then a lite wet sanding with a Tamiya 3000 sponge. Up next was the tops of the side pods and the flat area around the engine cover in Gravity Saudi Dark Green. The upper body shell that was previously painted in Gloss White was carefully masked, while the upper chassis was masked as well. Once the Saudia Green has been sanded and polished it will be masked and then the upper chassis as well as the lower chassis will be painted in Tamiya Gloss Black, then Alcad 2 Flat Aluminum. j joel

James,
Hopefully today I start with the color layers. I still need once that they're done and polished along with the white, is to prime using gloss Black and then Alcad 2 Flat Aluminum. The chassis is all Aluminum top and bottom, the top Chassis will need reverse masking. And at the rate I use Tamiya tape, I should get a discount directly from Tamiya USA.

I feel like masking is never ending with these F1 kits and taping is easily my least favorite process in a build - I just finished taping my front wing and the steps involved will require the same tape job repeated on the same section because of the multicolor aspects of the 023 front wing argh! Your taping on this looks stellar though Joel - the lines should be nice and sharp by the time you're finished - and its awesome to have that green specific to the Saudi livery - awesome! Can't wait to see how this section paints out for you

Adrian, Maybe we can get a group discount on a supply of Tamiya tape.
Agreed that nothing has more taping and repeated tapings then F1 cars. And like you it's one of my least favorite parts of a build. I'd even pay more for pre-cut masks, and we could just trace them and make all the ones we need.

I love Tamiya tape, and I noticed that others make versions of it. Same color but I wonder if its just as good.

Don't waste your money, the Guru's at Tamiya just know how to make the best stuff there is - you just have to stick with the yellow Tamiya tape, the knock offs are just that and you'll be re-taping a botched job which will drive you nuts - not worth in my opinion.

I've tried a few of the off brands offered on ebay, and none were as thin and bendable as Tamiya tape. But I also know that Tamiya doesn't make it, they buy it too. I've heard the name of the tape as Kaboo tape or something like that. But for me I can always get Tamiya tape from almost all my USA online sources and that's important to me.

Adrian, I envy you that you still have a local hobby shop. The closest one of two is 30 min and the other one is nearly an hour without traffic.
OK, I'm hooked on Tamiya tape for sure. I have and use their 1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 6mm, 10mm (most used for sure), 18mm, & their 40mm roll which I always screw up. I've never tried their sheet tape yet. I always have 1 spare of everything just in case. Plus 1 inch Home Depot masking tape, & 1 1/2 inch blue painters tape.
Most of the time by the time I figure out which size to use, it's bed time for this old guy.

Finally time for another update. Since my last update I've been busy air brushing the Gravity of Spain Saudi Air Dark Green on both the rear of the top body section and the tops of the side pods. After a few hours to dry and cure, I removed the masking tape from the top shell. Here's what it looks like along with the rear and front wings Next I removed the masking from the tops of the side pods, and after 2 days to cure I masked the tops of the side pods, and air brushed Mr. Color 1500 Black primer thinned out 1 part primer to 2 parts Leveler 400 thinner so that I'd get as smooth of a surface as possible and skip the black gloss under coat. Next day I air brushed on Alcad 2 Flat Aluminum for the cockpit and nose section, as well as the bottom chassis top and bottom. Here's the cockpit and the tops of the side pods along with the side skirts. and the bottom chassis. And a overall picture of the 3 main car components. Next up is decal prep. Not sure if I'll polish, then gloss, then polish again, or just polish for a smooth decal surface as I usually do. A decal surface isn't about being super glossy, it's about being smooth with no nooks & Crannies. joel

I was just thinking about the same thing over on my build. I decided that since I was able to get a pretty wet looking layer of paint, that is pretty smooth, I will do some light polish with Tamiya, lay the decals then clear. If my paint was bad, like me previous car then I would sand polish clear, then apply decals then clear again haha. Not by choice but necessity.

James, A world class IMPS national contest winner for years; Paul Budzik on his site did a tutorial several years ago on how he decals, and he's the one that I learned this process from. I, like most of the older generation learned decaling by the Microsoft method which starts with a gloss surface as that's how we got a somewhat smooth surface as military aircraft modelers. Eventually, Pledge Floor Finish became the easiest and quickest way to get a super shine, but not always.
One thing to keep in mind is that moving the decals around are a little harder, so use plenty of water over and around the decals till you have them in the correct placement. Looking forward to hearing how your decaling comes out.

Chris, Thanks so much for your most kind words. I'm looking forward to decaling as I find it the most enjoyable part of race car modeling for me. But that's not to say that every so often I do have my issues with decals that have a mind of their own.
