Revell VW Golf GTI

Another old build I just updated photos on and moved into a different display cabinet. This is actually a super cool little kit. I picked it up at a flea market, I believe for cheap. Was the Valvoline race car on the box art but the kit is just the factory Golf. I decided I wanted to have some fun with it as an only semi-desirable car. Found this Ancient old can of model master sublime green and just hosed it down. Earl Scheib special came to mind. Exciting gray interior and some weathering finished the look on this one. Some kid with his hot hatch bombing around town. You wouldn’t want to buy this on the used car market…

Looks good, Kyle! I like how you dirtied it up a bit. I knew a young guy who had a red one like this but he liked it for the gas mileage at the time and drove it for years! Imagine that!

I had a 79 Rabbit, same car I think. Every time my wife drove it in the rain it stopped. Finally found the issue was an undersized ground path in a box that held most of the car's electrical system. Soldered a length of acetylene welding rod across all the contacts and that problem went away. Finally sold it when it had less that 100,000 miles on it for $800. I would have paid them that much to take it!

Cool looking Golf! I agree all of the GTI's around from that time frame were rode hard and put away wet many times.

Thanks!! I don’t know that I’d be ok driving it for years but I think they could be fun little cars.

😂😂 I’ve had a few vehicles I’d have happily paid to get rid of. Lol

What a fun build Kyle. At first I thought it was a curbside kit but this one came with pretty much everything it looks like. I remember a kid who had one of these things and was asking me how to get 200hp out of the engine. I dang near spit my coffee out laughing when he asked me that but I told him if he wanted 200hp to sell it and get something with a V-8 in it.

Very cool. Buddy of mine had a Gulf years and years ago and I remember having to drive it. I always thought it weird how they had the reverse gate set up on those. But, since I grew up on American muscle that doesn't mean much. Cool build.

thanks! I’ve driven a lot of manual transmissions over the years but never a VW. What was the reverse gate like?

Thank you!! I think I just used Tamiya dark yellow with a drop of white. Just made something up based off pictures I saw online.

You have to shove the shifter down, left and up. Left and up I get, but the pushing the shifter down always thru me off. It's in the 1st position, just gated by shoving down first.  It works, just odd.
