MiniArt P-47D-30RA 1/48 “Operation Overlord Part 3”

After many long nights, I have finally finished this MiniArt P-47D-30RA Advanced Kit 1/48 with additional 3D printed assets that were created by Plasmo.

This P-47D along with two P-51B Mustangs were my contribution to an Operation Overlord Group Build. I somehow was able to build all three aircraft in just over a month.

Within a few weeks, these three aircraft will be placed on a maintenance diorama to mirror my Luftwaffe one.

What amazes me most is the fact that you have crammed in all this detail in a scale that is not easy to do this with. Larger scale yes, but this? WOW!!!!

Now this is the level of work that I aspire in aircraft modeling. Superb build in every sense of the word Keith. I'm going to have to go back through the build thread to see how you did a couple of things so I can duplicate this kind of outcome on my own aircraft builds.

To achieve this finish:

Between each of these steps I allowed roughly 1-2 days of curing time.

Alclad Gloss Black primer applied slightly wet. Mirror like reflection when dry
Alclad White aluminum in a few thin layers
Alclad Aqua Gloss varnish 
Taping and adding accent colors
Alclad Aqua Gloss Varnish
Decals
Alclad Aqua Gloss Varnish on the decals
Black oil wash - I let the oil dry for about 20 min before wiping it off. This brought the almost mirror finish down to a semi-gloss.
Tamiya Flat Varnish on accented areas. No additional Gloss was applied to the NMF areas
Weathering mainly achieved by using dry powder pigments (black and brown). With NMF, I have discovered the powders will NOT stick unless you have first done an oil wash on the whole thing. If you were to apply gloss varnish over the oil wash, the powder will just wipe away. The very thin layer of dried on oil creates a slightly porous surface for the pigments to adhere to.

Honestly, I was bad about documenting the process on all three planes compared to normal. They had a due date of 9/10 for a competition, and I didn't start them until the very end of July. If you have any specific questions, I can probably provide an answer. Additionally, there are tons of videos I took along the way which were not posted here since it is less friendly to use this site for videos vs photos.

PS - I've seen a few of your open aircraft and know you your work is on the same level, if not even better than mine!

Haha, Thanks Kyle! This might be the favorite aircraft I have built. When walking into my "Man Cave" this and the two Mustangs in their NMF catch my eye almost immediately. They really stand out compared to the traditional painted aircraft.
