I've never been brave enough to attempt a figure. I'll be watching this one progress and hopefully pick up a few more tips on the way. Wonderful work so far!

Thanks fellas. I haven't done a figure for a couple of years and plan to do 2 or 3 to get my skills back in shape for my Confederate artillery set.

This is high up on my modeling list for when I retire - finally learn how to paint figures.

I reckon you're absolutely right and you know, with all these conservationists around these days it's so hard to get bat wings and eye of newt....

I'm all in on this as I'm like Brent having never tried figure work before. What you've got started here looks good to my eye and I'll be watching for future updates.

This first pic shows the pallets and paint I'm using. I firstly squeeze some oil paint from the tube to a piece of cardboard. This soaks up the extra oil from the paint. I then transfer it onto a non-porous surface which I use as a pallet, (in this case a white plastic lid from a food container.
The next photo shows the colour beginning to go on. I have already mixed some colours on my pallet to reflect different shades of flesh. ie lighter, darker.
I usually run a line of of Burnt Umber around hair/beard lines and where flesh meets uniform, eg. headgear, collar, etc. I build the colour up as I go, adding shadows and then flesh and then highlights, blending as I go.
This all takes time and patience, lots of patience and practice! But it's like any model, you hope it's going to turn out the way you see it in your head, but things don't always go to plan. I still have failures and have to strip the thing and start over. There are also far better painters than me, but I enjoy figures and keep trying. It's all about light and shadow and careful blending. Listed below are the paints I will be using. Enamels: Humbrol matt 25 blue, Humbrol Authentic Colours ML5 British Crimson, Humbrol Authentic Colours HB2 Dark Earth, Humbrol 33 matt black, Humbrol 34 matt white, Humbrol 24 matt yellow, Humbrol 63 flesh. Oils Winsor & Newton (WN), red, WN titanium white, WN ivory black. Art Spectrum AS burnt umber, AS jaune brilliant.

Your flesh tones look great! Thanks and +1 karma for the detailed description of how you achieved the look you did.

Thanks very much for the kind words fellas, and the karma Handi. Don't know if I've really explained the process well enough, so please, if anyone wants more clarification, just ask.
