So now that I've assembled an OOB Meng kit, I have a craving to actually build something.
I have basic parts from an ancient glue bomb that are the right shape and vintage, so I thought I'd try a tube frame something from the sixties. I'm improvising as I go, and I'm not sure exactly what I'm building yet. Something Crossle or Brabham like I think.
I took the old tub, cut the front and back off it, made some inner fuel tank liners and a front bulkhead, and installed the main tubes (evergreen tubing).
While I was at it, I modified a seat I had to fit (not glued in)
Probably a long term on again off again project. Yes, I am nuts, lol.

I started this motor a while back, got this far and put it back in the box. It's a printed resin something, decided to try to convert it to a mid sixties 1.6. Much chopping up, styrene bits and a cast resin cam cover. Maybe I can make it work.

I bought some sets of tires from a guy in Germany, they're period correct for mid to late sixties Dunlops. Tires are cast resin in two halves that glue together. They work fine. The wheels are a bit crude, a lot of cleanup needed but they might be usable.

I concluded I'd better see how the engine fits before I go any further. So a primer coat first.
A bit scruffy but it'll work.
To be any use I had to assemble it to the transmission, just a Hewland from the scrap yard. Easier to give a base coat of paint first, AK Aluminum plus Tamiya SG light gunmetal, I can get fancy later.
The rod at the front is really the water pump pulley mount, but I might use it to locate the engine if I can disguise it.

The engine looks wonderful with the combo of parts and scratched pieces you put together.

As a kid I read articles showing modelers chopping up, modifying stuff on cars. It all seemed so far beyond my abilities and it still does.
That said, I am truly amazed that anyone can start build something from an idea out of this and that, and make it come together and work. So glad you are posting this for me/us to watch.

Greg, I just approach it the way I would build a real car, except the model doesn't have to run when I'm done.
A mock up to make sure the ride height is OK
Now that I know how the engine will nest, build the trans carrier and what basics that can be done before the final engine installation.
Engine test fit
cheers

paul, What a great scratch project. Amazing work so far as you make it look easy. Naturally mear modeling mortals like Greg and myself know that the skill level to build like this is way harder then it looks.

Very nice. The perfect cradle to house your engine and transmission. Didn’t think about ride height. Since you’re a rat h building it becomes quite necessary to figure that out before your do your mounts. Love it.

It's hard to get motivated at the moment. I've been told something medically that has no pleasant outcomes. But I have been picking away at it, keeps the mind from wandering, lol.
A mockup of the front suspension to establish some mounting points
The basic frame, lots of cleanup needed, but I think I have most of it covered.
cheers guys

Good luck with the medical thing, Paul. Thanks John. I survived the bone scan (I do glow in the dark a bit) and today's alien probe, so hanging in for the moment.

The tub frame looks absolutely fantastic. Just amazing scrtch building skills.
