Shortly after I rejoined the hobby I discovered, much to my surprise, that there werer entire websites devoted to nothing but scale modeling. I was delighted to find this out, and wasted no time in joining one, which shall remain nameless. I figured that rubbing shoulders with fellow enthusiasts would be a fine thing, even if it was electronically.
So I post a few pics and type a few lines and all's swell. Swell until I began to follow other posts, one in particular which stands out in memory. There was a guy who had built a kit, he was a beginner, and his technique and final result showed this so plainly that a cheeseburger could see it. No harm, I figured, everyone has to start somewhere and in spite of the above, he did a pretty nice job of it.
Well, the forum regulars decended on this guy like a flock of magpies squabbling over the eyes of a fresh roadkill. I was appalled at some of the rude and downright mean spirited comments made. The guy pulled his post and disappeared forthwith; I can't say as I blame him. It disgusted me to the point where I disappeared shortly afterward also, because this was not the only example of such behavior on that site.
I know, the world still turns and I'm breathing as of yet. This, however, still bothers me from time to time and I figured I'd bounce it off of some of you to see what you think. What's with these guys?
Regards, Mark

What's with these guys? Regards, Mark I call them "forum heroes". They have such little respect of themselves that they need to point out every single thing that makes them better than the others. Including being disrespectful and, often, masochistically aggressive. As long as a critique is aimed to help the criticized modeller, I can stand it. But such guys don't want to help, they just want to show their superiority (often misjudged).

You guys pretty much summed up why I stay clear of most other forums and call MSC my home.

Well Mark I think Chris basically summed it all up and I think most here agree. I too was tired of seeing that being done to beginners, and intermediate builders. Some people forget this is just a hobby and to have fun. Not every one wants to build the worlds most accurate model, but instead build what we are happy with. We all have different skill levels in building and especially painting. Not every one can do all these new techniques or afford all the latest paints and weathering products, so we have to keep this in mind when giving our comments. I try to offer tips but will never tell a modeler he or she has to do it this or that way, or that the model is not accurate....unless it's a very obvious mistake.
This is why I set up the forum ( MSC ) and have my site, to share and let fellow modelers have a safe haven to hang out and build models............and have fun doing it.

Really a shame. I think it is a sign of our times - and the Internet allows angry people to destroy others anonymously in an attempt to feel better about themselves. Given all of the other hobbies in these modern times, we should do everything we can to encourage, not discourage new model builders. It's a great feeling to get someone involved and see them blossom!

Mark....I've had negative experiences on other sites as well. ...Rob has down the modelling world a favor and created our little corner of the world....and in my humble opinion MSC is the standard of which all others should be judged! No matter what your talent level your a modeler first, and if built to your expectations than so be it...be your own critic, and seek advice bring your talent to another level you might just amaze yourself!!! thats MSC in a nutshell!! Proud to call MSC my home, Chris67 +1 I do dip into other forums occassionally, and inevitably, get reminded why this site is th best P

It pleases me to hear that you all consider this your home for modeling. I have been a member of other forums for years and for the past year or so have strayed away from most.

'Forum heroes' I like that term, and shall adopt it forthwith.
I don't get this smug, superior attitude. It crops up from time to time on some sites and is pointless.
Critique properly yes, that helps improves skill levels is applied properly...and thats constructive. Criticism to make yourself feel big for the sake of it is destructive and a waste of time apart from making small people feel big.
I reckon it is down to the leadership principles which is why 'MSC is the place to be'...
...that rhymes, see what I did there ;D
Smudge
PS; I bet I can guess the site.

Hello fellow MSC'ers Every word above has been spot on. It also is one of the many reasons i also feel right at home here. I can be pretty...ummm...well...easily confused. Im not the sharpest tool in tha shed! I killed most of my brain cells when i was runnin' wild back in tha days. LOL ;D ;D I have PM'ed a few times with silly questions and everyone has been so helpfull and understanding. The Mods know what i mean. On another site, i wont mention the name, I posted a finished build and had A guy start like this - "Looks pretty nice BUT..." After the "BUT" he went on a huge rant on why i got this and that wrong and "thats not accurate"! I was really kinda crushed and confused as i supported his works regularly. Anyways, Im forever greatful for BigJohn telling me about this forum and all you fellas here are wonderful lads!!! Gary

Smudge, I'll bet you can.
Good to see that I am not alone in regard to such behavior. I'd guessed as much within a week of joining up here but confirmation of this, ah that's golden.
Rob, you've done us all a service by starting this; I for one am grateful and it seems I am not alone once again.
Bullardino, Forum Heroes I like altho I call them other things which I leave to your imagination. Probably cannot repeat them here.
Everyone, it's a sorry thing that all of us have had to endure such foolishness from supposed adults, but we know the answer now, do we not?
Like this site, great to rub elbows with a like minded bunch.
Regards, Mark

For me,I moved over to THE best site, because all me mates were here, and they all knew me as a pretty good starter of builds, but a REALLY bad finisher!!! ...Here,I don't feel the need to be a 'blogging machine',I can take what little mojo I seem to have, and post it as and when, but STILL feel truly involved in the hobby. ;D ;D.... As for RC's who only join to criticise.......I'm just glad there aren't any here on MSC!!! ;D ;D

I have seen some nasty stuff on other forums as well. There are literally modeling Nazis out there. We must remember that there are many people all over the world that are members on the ever growing number of model forums out there. We can't expect everyone of them to be civil, sensible and intellegent not to mention sane. I can only imagine what kind of serious psychological problems some of these guys might have. I've seen a number of rude posts that you could tell were made for no other reasons than to cause trouble. In terms of critiquing, I think if someone wants some, they'll ask for it. And of course there is a nice, helpful way to do it.

I agree with Matt,if someone sees where a fella can improve,it can be done thru a friendly PM,as opposed to a potentially off putting post,on thread! It is then up to the individual, what he does, and whether he shares it,for future readers. But as far as I'm concerned, this site don't give out 'Negative Vibes'(Oddball)...anyway..... ;D

I am with you guys. I came here directly from a forum where I frequently see this. I consider this my primary stop now.
Sometimes I want to help but I remind myself not to overstep the line if the modeler is not asking for help or feedback. Please do not hesitate to help me or share feedback when I am seeking to improve my builds. Hell yeah, I want to be ugly like you guys...

I have found those type of critics on some of my builds in the past and one effect it had on me and still does to this day is that i dont tend to blog much in full anymore. Before i had repeated attacks on one site i used to love blogging a whole build but it took it out of me and i havnt been the same on posting since. I find i just put up bits and pieces now and never a full build. Its a shame these people are out there and most cant even model themselves. They have been named Trolls on the site where i exsperienced them and cause upset for fun.

Hey Bodge, I just want you to know that I for one enjoy seeing your work. And I'm sure the others here would agree. Please don't be shy about posting here. Your a better person than those who have attacked you on the other forums. I bet those critics never had any thing to show!
It's not just the forums, It was like that back in the 90's before there was any such forums to hang out in.
I used to build for IPMS competition and attend all the shows. There was always some self proclaimed expert that didn't know his A$$ from a hole in the ground putting models down.
That was also back in the day when Verlinden was staring out and making the hobby more exciting with all the AM goodies. I always heard some one putting Verlinden down complaining that his models where not accurate. But Verlinden kept right on building, and producing new stuff didn't he? Verlinden is still around and the big complainers probably gave up the hobby.
Well, I'm off my soap box now. Back to looking at a lot of cool stuff here on MSC!!!!!!!

I agree with John, I think we'd all enjoy seeing Bodge do a few blogs of his builds. This would be an appropriate venue for you to do so. I really haven't seen any buttheads on here I have to say. It's a good freindly atmosphere here.

yup, actually two things I really dislike at modelling fora are the ones mentioned above, and the other ones are people who post their stuff and expect to have response to their work, but fail to give other peoples the heads up or a swift (positive) response. Indeed, this is not the only forum where I'm active, but as mentioned a gazillion times above, the atmosphere amongst each other is one of the best I've seen on the net...what am I saying? It IS the best atmosphere on the net!!!!!! ;D the level of talent on site is massive as well, the MoM comp (not only that of course) is the best proof of that, getting tougher and tougher every time. I shall say only on thing more: don't let those trolldudes and dudettes mess up things for ya, just ignore them. I can live with critique btw, as long as it's constructive ;D I'd say, let's all have a beer or other kind of spirit on me ;D Here's one to MSC!!!! (darn, if we could have a beerbottle smiley like on a another forum ;D) Cheers
