Well, i guess the good thing about building this kit is that there are a few 109E's in progress already on the forum so inspiration is never too far away I blame Chris S for this, waving his matchbox BF109 under my nose. I have made one before, in 1/48th, so this is a simple re visit of a past experience on a grander scale. i've planned this as a long term project as i will be experimenting quite a bit on how to alter the kit quite drastically... P1020561 by Brembo2012, on Flickr I chose to do this particular model for a number of reasons. First off the Trumpeter E-4/7 is one of the newer kits on the block. it has the option to expose the radio bay (which i intend to do) and has a full radio setup avail to be modelled in fuselage. it has the right markings and suits the period i want to model it into...this will become important later on... it has full engine and gun bay detail as well as a good cockpit. and lastly, and most importantly, it looks like it will be easy to remove the wings....(did i mention i was an armour modeller???) P1020562 by Brembo2012, on Flickr the first thing i did was to check how easy it would be to take out a wing root? in this pic the top fuse sect has a wing root ...and the bottom one hasn't. it was relatively easy to do with a tamiya panel line scriber... P1020563 by Brembo2012, on Flickr This is the lower wing plan, the next stage is to remove the outer wing panels to leave the center secvtion free to reattach to the fusee... P1020566 by Brembo2012, on Flickr The top cowling needed to be thinned out on its trailing and leading edges (which are quite thick!). i plan to have the engine exposed... but the cowling close by... so if you havent already guessed it , the plan is to build this without its wings on.... i like a good challenge....

So, i have been some what distracted by a certain sherman, but never the less, last night i managed to make some forward progress on the 109. I do re gard this a long term project so it wont be winning any awards for build speed, but heres where i am up to so far; Bf 109E 002 by Brembo2012, on Flickr this is the second time i've had this book out, the first it was to do the 1/48 hasegawa 109e 4/7 and that was in the mid 90's!...good to get a second use out of it then.... ;D Bf 109E 001 by Brembo2012, on Flickr my next reference is rather new, and somewhat of an overview of the type, so it covers all 109 marques....all quite interesting tho! Bf 109E 003 by Brembo2012, on Flickr and lastly the Sqn Sig walk around....this one you have to be careful with as they are using pics of some swiss 109s which can be a little differant to the german types and certainly the cocpits feature some rather modern adaptations to the instruments....interpretation is key. between these 3 i was sufficently overwhelmed with data... Bf 109E 005 by Brembo2012, on Flickr cockpit build was pretty straight forward, starting with the tub. models 5 014 by Brembo2012, on Flickr then undercoated into flat black models 6 014 by Brembo2012, on Flickr followed by a layer of RLM 02 (floor staying black) Bf 109E 008 by Brembo2012, on Flickr DB601 engine block models 5 012 by Brembo2012, on Flickr DB601 in black base coat models 6 016 by Brembo2012, on Flickr detail of supercharger and exhaust models 11 015 by Brembo2012, on Flickr engine with initial painting complete... models 11 016 by Brembo2012, on Flickr painted engine inverted (the correct way up) with detail of super charger and exhaust stubs models 5 011 by Brembo2012, on Flickr preshade on the inner fusee sides models 6 010 by Brembo2012, on Flickr RLM02 over pre shade models 11 011 by Brembo2012, on Flickr cock pit fitted to fusee models 11 013 by Brembo2012, on Flickr detail of painted cockpit... models 6 009 by Brembo2012, on Flickr initial test fit on fuselage.
