Hey, so what do you guys use to flat your models after everything else is done? I've used Model Master Acrylic Flat in the past, which I never had any issues with...until yesterday. Turned a good chunk of my Leopard 1 a nice milky white color. Thrown into the trash bin immediately.
I know there's a future/tamiya flat base mix some like, any luck with that?

Whoah, a new Tamiya flat clear? Ordering today! If it sprays like the rest of their acrylics, I'm in!

Dupes, a very good flat coat is Vallejo's. And sure, Tamiya is my favorite brand too.

Hadn't considered Vallejo's. I like all of their other stuff, so I'll give that a shot as well (especially since I can't find Tamiya's new stuff in stock anywhere other than Lucky Model at the moment).
Dicky - don't know if I have a source for Humbrol rattle cans here in the states. I'll have to poke around some more. Once I (finally) have my spray booth finished it shouldn't be an issue blasting away with the big can!

Hi mate, the best matt varnish available (or that's what fellow modellers said to me ;D) is ModelMasters Flatt coat (but I don't think it's their acrylic one): I used it recently and it works out superbly thinned with their AB thinner: a very nice matt coat can be obtained with that
Cheers

Hm, I usually don't clear coat at the end. I found this will tone down all effect some times. I use either the enamel Testors flat coat, or Vallejo. Actually I have been finding the Vallejo at times will be a satin finish. I have started using the K4 clear flat as it dries dead flat and goes on smooth and dries fast. I normally just use the flat clear to seal for HS technique or in between weathering to again seal from the next layer. Keep in mind that giving a clear flat at the end over the entire model will give an overall flat finish...of course right. This can kill the effects of a paint satin finish with the flat streaking, dust, oil and fuel stains etc.

Pretty close to the Boss on this...ANY flat...Testors', Vallejo, Tamiya, K4, Future during the chipping stages and weathering processes when needed. Rarely, in fact never on the end game. Agreed the Vallejo is too satin for this...Tmaiya is excellent and I too have found the K4 spot on my 0.023 Cents (15% tax included)

Turns out I have some Vallejo "in stock". Which is good, because apparently NO ONE has Tamiya XF-86 "in stock". Blah. Maybe I'll find some at Granitecon/Baycon.

my weapon of choice is winsor & newton galeria acrylic matt varnish, it can sprayed straight out of the bottle although I tend to add a few drops of water.

Interesting...think my LHS has a full line of W+N. Will see if they've got that in!

If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the precipitate.

Dupes
Did you find the Windsor and Newton stuff? Get a chance to try it yet? I'd be interested to hear how it turned out.

Hmmmm...I have not. I KNEW there was something I was supposed to be looking for at the LHS. Might be able to swing in there tonight.
I actually had really good luck with the Vallejo Matt Varnish, which I'm pretty sure is why I stopped looking!
I did get a slight bit of whitening with it, but only in select spots - I'm starting to wonder if it's a reaction to the decal setting solutions I'm using, or perhaps the Future. More investigation required.

I've happily used both W&N Galleria and Humbrol Matt Cote although if you get carried away with the Humbrol it can go white!

Some flat acrylic choices I was not aware of.
Since it seems the preferred, or at least currently preferred, method of weathering, fading etc is with oils and spirits ala Mig, AK products, Spanish school, whatever you want to call it... anyone have experienced with painting with enamels... obviously not conducive to spirits for any weathering... giving an acrylic flat coat to protect the enamel? Does it cover well enough that the spirits don't seep under the flat coat and loosen the enamel?

Marc , as you probably know i use enamels and then cover that with Future when i do the artist oils wash . I thought i'd skip the glossy Future and just protect the enamel with coat of Future/Tamiya flat base. It protected the enamel well enogh but ...........due to the rougher finish from the flat coat the oil wash really stuck into the sufrface and i couldnt wipe it off well ..the entire surface pretty much soaked up the wash . I had to repaint and go with the Future gloss coat b4 my oil wash again . Another thing i've found is that if its humid , and it sometimes is in my basement man-cave , the acrylic flat coats tend not cure as fast and will not be as flat . HTH

Hey Dupes, For all my aircraft I paint pretty much all in MM Enamels, and then after all the decalling hoo-ha and that stuff, I will flat coat with Mr. Hobby (Gunze Sangyo) Acrylic Flat Clear. Thus far I have had no problems at all with it, and it dries to a dead flat finish. Cheers, Sam
