Are there any USN Phantom experts out there ?
I have taken a real notion for the Tamiya 1/32 USN Phantom II.
I can get my hands on the F-4J Phantom II Marines version. Apart from the markings, does anyone know if there are any other differences in the airframe, pipes or pit?
Chris.

Hi Chris,
i have the MDF Phantom II book on the U S Navy & Marine Corps Variants and as far as i can see there is no difference between the Navy and Marine variants. There is a chapter on the "J" version that deals with it's usage by the Navy & Marines and there is no mention of differences. There is also a build of the Tamiya kit and he says the only issues he came across were the intakes, fit, and the decals, although it was not stipulated as to what the issue was with the decals. In my experience if you are going to use any AM parts, such as cockpit or exhausts, i recommend a lot of dry fitting as the ones i have used are not the best, fit wise. Excellent detail and accuracy but horrible fit issues.
Regards from the Swamp

There's no difference between a Navy or Marine F4-J according to the info I have on them, a J is a J no matter who's flying them Chris

Dupes,If memory serves, the 'Brits' used F4J's,as a stop gap, until we put the RR engines in them.

I thought there were some modifications to the "Brit" J's, though? Before the FG.Mk.1 and 2?

Great stuff folks, thanks alot. I got the kit and it actually has USN decals for VF-84 Jolly Rogers anyway. From a little research, it seems the decals are not great. so I have ordered up a set from a company called Modeldecal. Its a combo set, mostly dry transfers with a few water slide ones. 7 sheets in total, so a lot of rubbing.

Certainly will do a WIP Scott. Thanks for dropping by, just waiting on Eduards colour PE pit set and 'Brassin' seats, then I'll kick-off with the office
