In the late 80's and throughout most of the 90's my partner and I were fortunate to be able to indulge our love of music, gigs, and festivals you name it. One of the bands we followed was Hawkwind and due to the nature of the band it was not long before we got to know the various members, in some cases very well. By that I mean we could turn up at any gig, anywhere in the country and we would not have to pay to get in and would be on all areas access passes. It did not matter who of the band we saw all of them were very generous. It would be wrong to single any one person out, however there was one member who did go out of his way to make us feel welcome and look after us. His name was Huw Lloyd Langton, possibly the best guitarist Hawkwind ever had, certainly the most individual sounding of all their guitarists.
During the 90's Huw released many solo albums and it was to my great pleasure that Lyn and I were allowed to attend the recording seasons in the Pink Dog Studios in Sussex. We would spend a few hours in the recording studio, after we had got home from work, then go to the Warwick Arms for a couple of drinks before Huw went back to the recording studios and we went home. Then there were the solo gigs/tours that Huw did. We would try to go to as many of them as we could and always paid for our tickets. Huw would always tell us we were daft to do that as he was happy to get us in, but we knew that any guests the band has, the band has to pay for. The type of tours Huw did was on a shoe string so there was no way we wanted to take any money off him in the form of gig tickets.
As far as I am concerned he was a gentleman and a brilliant and unique guitarist who has never had the credit and respect he deserved.
Rest in peace Huw....there is no more pain.
