Converting and painting a Hornet head

Hi guys ,Here goes. Start with a bald hornet head and some green stuff modelling clay. Tear of small strips of green stuff once you have mixed some together.



Start building it up to create the hairstyle you want. In this case i am doing a couple of Coo lKats from the fifties. Once you have the general shape made up consisting of top sides and back you can start to skulped the modelling clay .I do this with a sharp modelling knife. Working in the hair style as you go. Remember how different styles are.The sides are swept back in this case with the quiff teased up at the front with the rest slicked back


Next when the clay has hardened i coated the heads in primer

Colour is then laid on in acrylics starting with a base coat of flat flesh


Next came the shadows in a darker base colour with a mix of flat flesh and dark rose.


Next i marked out some highlight area,a with the base colour with some white added. I allways use the base colour on shadows and highlights for unity.

With this stage done i picked out the eyes in a black brown and painted in the hair. This was followed by light diluted filter coats of the base colour and when dry the red shadows and cheeks were painted in with a very diluted oil paint.

Here is another example i did with a well known Alpine figure. It gave him mediate individuality.

Doing this is not to difficult with some practice and it will give you a figure no one else has.

Great SBS Andy, I'd love to be able to paint figures in acrylics but I'm still no sure how to blend the colours. Maybe you could tell me

So it's just a case of thinning the paint and laying on top of the last coat, While it's still wet ??

Robbo definately not while the paint is still wet. Dry completely with hair dryer between coats.Base colour,dry,shadows,dry very thin blending coats dry between each. Highlights,dry. Blending coats of the original base colour very thin paint and dry between each coat. Its quick with the old hairdryer
