Hello all. First time posting here. Picked up a 1/48 KT P Turret tamiya set over a year ago (along with a 1/35 tiger ) and now just started on it. I don't have the best knowledge of all the different types and compani's / camo scheme's for this tank. Also, tamiya paint is somewhat limited due to poor resellers in my lockal area. So what I have to work with is as follow. xf68 nato brown xf61 dark green xf5 flat green xf10 flat brown xf81 dark green (raf) xf26 deep green xf59 desert Yellow xf60 dark Yellow xf57 buff xf52 flat earth xf9 hull red xf4 yellow green xf 61 and xf64 are sold out. What I want to do try to do a light worn 3 tone soft camo like in the : WIP: Tamiya 1/48 King Tiger build tread. I will pick up a 1/35 KT later and do it more accurate to history, so this 1/48 is somewhat just a test to se what I can do with my cheap abrush. That's why I mentioned what I have on hand now, so maybe some of you could give me a hint on what to try / mix and blend This is how it's at the moment. Hi Sollie.....first off, welcome to the site ;D....and secondly,I reckon you have the basic colours there for what you will need for the tri tone camo, but better guys than me will be along soon to help even more. The basic tri tone appears to be subjective, depending on the 'Look' you want to portray.Hang in there, someone will chip in and give good advice,I'm sure!

Hi mate, very nice to see another KT appear here. Seems like the basecolor is a nice base to begin with mate. I'd say that for the green you could use a mixture of Nato green with the basic yellow tone you used. For the brown you can make a mixture of Flat Brown, Hull Red and the basic yellow color. And don't worry if you have some overspray: the real thing (except for the hard edge camo ones of course) had overspray as well, as the crews airbrushed them in the field. Is there a specific KT you are trying to depict or one of a certain unit? Let me know if you need some more advice: I got a wonderful KT book here which I could take a look in. Btw: my first build ever is a KT as well. I used Vallejo Model Air colors for that and I got a lot of nice commentaries about the color shades, so you might consider using them someday: Looking forward to next steps in this build, and defo looking forward to your 1/35 KT as well! Cheers

that's cool!!! Though I think it drives a lot faster than the real one did LOL. I want a 1:1 KT ;D ;D doesn't matter how expensive the AB is btw: as long as you get the results oh: and the Vallejo colors I used were Dark Yellow, Olive Grün and Tank Brown Cheers

The KT is looking good so far my freind have you tried the colour modulation technique yet? its not to every ones taste but i think it really makes a model look spectacular. Once you get some washes and dust on her she will be fine.

Not done that danb. I google it just now and found a missing lynx article, But if you would brake it down in a few simple ' you do this to achieve this' I would be grateful.

Thanks guy's. Just a bitt unsure what next step should be. Cover the model with a coat to protect the camo, ore just go ahead with the next step When I did my 1/16 tiger I just made a mix of xf21+22 and covered the model when I was done with the colour, then bought a few mig pigments and made it dirty.

Hey Sollie when i have sprayed the base colours i always protect them with 2 or 3 coats of gloss cote then i do all my weatherin
When i painted my KT i used the colour modulation technique i started with Tamiya dark yellow as the base colour then for highlighting certain panels i used a 50/50 mix of Tamiya buff and dark yellow then i used buff for a lighter highlight on small areas there are a few threads on this forum on the technique but you should experiment and find your way of doing it as everyone has a different approach on the subject hope this helps

Hello Sollie! Looking mighty fine there Sir! Can't go wrong with a quick clear coat my friend! Not really necessary if your next step is not acrylic based. After looking back you applied Vallejo paint (correct?)...you would be able to apply a filter directly over this if you wanted. Like I said though, can't go wrong by throwing down a clear coat in between!! Just remember that things might be dry, just not cured.

thanks alot for the kind words. Danb: I thought CM was something you would do with the base colour, building that up before the camo(and other colours came on the model) I will read some more about it.
TRM: I used tamiya. But I will take a trip to the hobbystore next week. Made a call tody, and he said they would have some good prices on mig product's since they switching to AK. They carry Vallejo paint.
We went to se my grandmother today, so no work tonight. :-)

Hiya Sollie!! Great progress buddy!!! Seems you got a nice haul of new toys!!! Am I correct in that you are wondering what to cut the oils with?? Mineral Spirits or simple Paint Thinner. The yellow cap is Lacquer thinner!! That is used to thin the Tamiya paints. I would use water or distilled water to cut the Model Air and certainly White Spirits, Mineral Spirits, Paint Thinner for the oils.
Have you used oils before???

Nope, first time with oils. I was fasinated when I saw some tube video's where they just randomly plased smal blobs of diff. colours and used downward strokes to make dirt/oil/rain streak's /washes etc.
The guy at the LHS was not the model builder guy(he had the day off) - (they do rc/ modelbuilder kit and railroad all in one store). So I was just lead into the back room where I could dig in the MIG box they had put aside. And When I asked what to 'cut' the oil with he said, this should do , so I just grabed it. I kinda new it was wrong in some way, but I can use it otherwise( just smelling the cap makes me an airhead , hehe)
The model air is airbrush ready, since xf64 is empty in all LHS arround I got the M air tank brown to have if it takes long for the xf64 to show up . But he said to use D water to thin it even more, so he was right in one place.
Thanks for helping out

Hi Sollie, nice work so far. In fact I thought the chipping was excellent for a first go.
I usually thin Vallejo Model Air paint even though they say it's not neccessary, usually with water that I've added some dish soap to. Some people have trouble spraying Vallejos, it can dry quickly and clog the outlet, so I clean it regularly as I spray with some airbruch cleaner on a paint brush. If you have no airbrush cleaner I think windex is similar.
Keep up the good work! Cheers JT
